Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

If I were a dog, I would be a border collie.

A barking dog is worth his weight in gold to prevent a home invasion. Trust me on this (and not because I do the burgling). Suffice to say I have spoken to enough folks who say trying to break into a house with a dog simply isn't worth it. For every house that has a dog, there are three others that don't.

Dogs have long been the most effective home security system available.

If I were a dog, I wouldn't be Sam.

I am not worthy.

I bought one of these (except in Newfie form) for my parents...

It was just a joke amongst the family, but apparently one of the neighbors' friends quickly took note of it and was a bit worried about our black bears (formerly known as Newfoundlands).

I'm on a Bike Club mailing list. When I saw the title of the following e-mail, I thought that the Freds had had enough and decided to fight back.

Turns out it's just a misplaced political alert.

"This is your town, Help protest Nazis in Knoxville"

Didn't you see that movie? The one where the town tried to stop them, or was it the KKK, from marching, and they got way more publicity because of it?

Most Goldens would never attack an intruder, but they do bark like all hell when anyone whose smell they don't recognize even approaches the property, they can smell them 200 meters from the friggin house. When I come home he doesn't stir, he knows it's me.

i love dogs. but there is no way i could be responsible for one and be totally commited for 15 years or whatever the life expectancy is. i had fish. they died nice and quickly. i got bored with them.

I remember when I was a kid, I had fish. The tank had a heater. We went on vaction, and my my mom told me to turn it off. I turned it all the way up. We came home to a tank full of dead fish.

Dogs are much more fun....

Yep. Having a dog is like having a kid. Big commitment. Cats are more like having house ornaments from Bed Bath & Beyond that shed.

i think by not getting a dog i like them more than many dog owners. the air on the moral high ground sure smells sweet.

Nothing beats sitting out on our front stoop hugging Sam as he sniffs the air and leans against me. That's when I know I'm home. God help me I do love that stupid dog.

don't confuse the thin air on mount doom breathed on the deck of casa cad for the sweet air of the moral high ground that i breathe.

Gotta love Goldens. Payton is part Golden and would give his life for me. God bless that dog. Saddest part is he's 12 and lumpy. Very, very sad.

If I recover when he goes, like his brother did last July, we're gonna get a Golden.

Brings a tear to my eye, but it usually does.

Many, if not most of you, are in big trouble. I've expanded my regular workout loop by 8 miles and 1000 feet of elevation. 25 miles and 2500 feet, it used to be a "weekend ride" because of the effort necessary. I've knocked 20 minutes off the completion time from when I first began the route 2 years ago. Topping out at 2500 feet, it's really scenic, with views of west Los Angeles, the San Fernando valley, and the Pacific ocean.
