Velo Vol 03-27-10 03:20 PM

The Knoxville Marathon is tomorrow. I signed up to be a course monitor (on bike) and have been assigned to a small group of wheelchair/handcyclists. How fast can handcyclists travel? I don't know that I've ever seen one.

Hopefully, I won't get dropped.

Depends. The hand cyclist course record for the Boston Marathon is close to 50 minutes faster than the running record. It's about 22mph average, which means you could get dropped. But most people I see end up getting passed by the front guys, even though they get a head start.

If the handcyclist(s) are using Zipps, you will get dropped. You might get dropped regardless...

Then again, you are talking about Knoxville... :innocent:

The winner of the Knoxville Marathon is generally in the group that doesn't get caught by the coal train that runs through the middle of town.

I'm watching 'The Blind Side'. It's turning me into a Vols fan.

An e-mail description said the winning time last year was "under 2 hours" (I assume not much under 2 hours) and the last one was about 3 hours, so I think I can handle that. I probably need to worry about the rear ones more anyway.

As for the other comments, your ignorance is more evident than that which you purport to mock.

And Kentucky goes down in flames.

This has been a great tournament.

A good ride after work then relaxing for the rest of the day...Last 2 stages of the Crit Intl on the dvr for some night time enjoyment.

Velo Vol 03-28-10 09:39 AM

Running a full marathon might be even dumber than cycling.

It is one thing to train with a cold, another to race with a cold. Shelled like a cheap pistachio on lap 6 of 12. Afterwards I took a Sudafed and two Advil and felt better. I shared post-aborted race hacks with kimconyc. Our man Jose was up in a three man break with two Axis dudes again this week. They had a large gap, they stayed clear, our boys took 2nd, 4th, 6th. It has turned into quite the battle with the strong Axis squad.

I drove home to soak my head.

You aren't sick. You just want justification for the failure.
