My Worst fear realized
I sit here venting to a bunch of complete strangers but whom I know are bike nuts like myself. I'm a newb here so i'll keep my story shirt. My wife started riding with me about 5 months ago. It was great to go on rides but I was always concerned about her.
Friday she had her first crash. this is what I have always been dreading. I was hoping for the best but unfortunately she broke her leg at a bad spot. She was in surgery yesterday and the surgeon put a plate and 5 screws in her leg. She is in pain and is in for months of recovery. I wish it was me in the hospital bed not her. I now realize what she goes through when she has to put up with me and my various injuries from various activities i do. Overall shes going to be ok so I am glad. It was also nice to know that after she asked the doctor "can I walk again?" she followed it up with "how soon until I get to ride my bicycle again?"
Just had to get some of that off my chest. I can't show too much fear or show my stress levels with her while I'm at the hospital with her b/c I dont want to stress her out anymore that she is. well off to the hospital again, wish us luck

hey man, good luck. My wife crashed her bike on the first day, luckily she just got the air knocked out of her. Fortunately nothing else happened, and that made her more aware of what is happening around her while she's on the bike.
Good luck on the recovery sorry for the bad news, take care of your wife, and get back to riding soon.

My GF jacked her right shoulder on a stupid clipless fall on a charity ride - standing still - a couple of years ago. Shoulder still bothers her sometimes.

Sorry to hear about your wife, and here's wishing her a speedy recovery.
Here's the thing: I get that you want to protect her from harm, and you may think you're responsible for everything (being the man and all), but there's a good chance she's tougher than you are (I know I couldn't handle childbirth as well as my wife did). Show her the same respect you'd give any of your riding buddies and talk about the accident openly.

Op, your wife is cool, the harder thing to do is come back to the bike after the 1st fall. I really cant imagine the accident because have had falls at 40 mph and no bones broken, and not only once but at least 5 times in training sessions. This remembers me a friend in LA that everytime we talk he have had a broken bone in a ride and the worse is that had been in the most stupid accidents ever like falling from a stand still or going 5 mph and somebody crash him and stuff.
U have to be strong and in the PT if it hurts u have to just make her do the stuff, u feel guilty and i hope the accident was not your fault. Things happen and she has to get up, suck the pain off and continue u know... thing that for sure u know...

Hope she recovers quickly. my wife crashed and broke her wrist about 4 years ago. she refuses to ride anymore, mostly because she didn't really like it that much.

Having the wife or gf crash does suck, especially if you're the one that talked them into getting a bike. That is one of my biggest fears too...
Remember if the helmet hit the ground, even if it didn't crack, it's safer to just buy a new one. When she is able to get back on a bike again, make sure she has healed and rebuilds her strength before doing a long ride or anything too strenuous, otherwise the likelihood of another crash increases due to fatigue and muscle imbalances. Good luck and hoping she has a speedy recovery!

thanks to everybody for the kind words, i really appreciate the support.
your right. though we dont have any kids yet im sure her pain tolerance is higher than mine.
Im a little curious how the PT is going to go. I wonder if it's similar to the PT I had to go through when I jacked up my knee a couple of years ago. one good thing is that she's a lot more fit than she was and shes not overweight so i'm hoping that will help PT.
im sure she can joke w/ them now. i would assume they would give her paperwork to show ?

yeah, that would be hard to see happen to someone so close. It does sound like she has a great attitude though. Wish her well from all of us and pamper her a bit in her recovery!!

My wife has crashed many times in our years of cycling together....
She's never broken bones, but has had some bruised ribs and a couple concussions...
Each time she gets back on the bike and gets back at it as soon as she can...
Take care of her and everything will be good...Women are (if not) tougher then men...Come on, they put up with us

Best wishes for a speedy recovery to her.
If it makes you/her feel any better, I got a plate and screws in my lower leg/ankle (and collarbone) and they healed just fine. I don't even know they are there. Best advice: do the physical therapy religously.
