Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

CAAD10 1: Love it, huge fan of murdered out frames
CAAD10 3: Black/White/Gray, I think it looks like, almost like the child of the 10 1 frame and 2011's black/white frame
CAAD10 3: White/Red, Not really a fan
CAAD10 4: I like the Raw frame over the Gulf colors; looks more professional, lol >_<
CAAD10 5: Same as the Ultegra, I like the Black/White/Gray; team replica is okay.

As you can tell, I'm a fan of darker colors. : \ If I had the chance to replace my CAAD10 black/white frame with a CAAD10 1 frame, I would take it.

What do you think of the colors?

Bikes: a few

I could swear there was a beautiful all-red option for 2012. Maybe it's frameset only, or maybe I'm thinking of 2011...

Fair enough. It does suck that the blacked out frame is the top model. Can you order the frameset in any color?

My favorite color for cars is white. Hence my username "Alpine" as in Alpine white form my 6 series bmw. I also love lime green so I got the 10-5 in liquigas colors. My second favorite frame was the raw 10-4. I would have ordered that is they didn't have stock of my first choice.

No. Only the Caad10 5 colors are available, which is what I did. Built a black Caad10 5 frame up with a mix of sram and ritchey. Very pleased. I ride with guys to bought the all black Caad 10 1s and sold ALL the parts and replaced them with Sram Red Black and Black 3T. Very hot but out of my price range, even with team discounts.

Yeah that is a lot of work too. I actually like the look of the black/white with some 50mm carbon wheels and some nice white logos like the Boyd/Zipp logos. I'm not in any position to benefit from carbon aero wheels. The vitesse wheels though will be on my bike once I get some miles on it.

Bikes: CAAD10

Now that I've decided to save up more instead of get a new bike soon, I'll be able to afford a better bike.

What is your guys opinion on this:
CAAD10 5 (105 - $1500) with $500-600 wheelset = $2000-2100
vs
CAAD10 3 (Ultegra - $2100) with no upgrades = $2100

Both 2012, new @ LBS.

CAAD10 5 has Shimano RS10 wheels on it. FSA Gossamer Pro Crankset. Tektro brakes.
CAAD10 3 has Makic Aksium WTS. FSA SL-K Light Crankset. Ultegra Brakes.

I already have Continental GP4000S tires I'll put on either.

FPSDavid, I have last iteration of 105 shifting (Shimano 5600) with an FSA Gossamer crankset, Tektro 540(?) brake calipers, and SRAM 1050 chain on one bike and a full Ultegra current version 6700 groupset (actually has a Dura-Ace cassette, hehehe) on another bike. The front shifting on the Ultegra bike is better but not by an incredible amount, enough to be noticeable. The rear shifting is almost the same between 5600 and 6700. Ultegra braking is superior to the Tektro, but the Ultegra has Dura-Ace pads and the Tektro has stock Tektro pads. I set up and dialed in the shifting on both bikes, so I doubt this is a side effect from installation.

I think you should ride both bikes and see if you have a strong preference for the one over the other. Also, are you building your own wheels or have a factory set in mind that you have test ridden? Just because a wheelset is more expensive doesn't mean you will necessarily like their ride more or see a performance increase from them...

CAAD10 5 with a Soul wheelset($500)
And maybe later swap out the breaks for 105s or some other aftermarket brakes

Neither really, just looking @ the various options between 5-600 bucks.

Loose headset needs figuring out, steerer needs to be cut, left brifter is loose, adjust the shifting a bit, find a shorter stem, figure out when to make the switch to clipless, possible remove the stickers from the RS10s because I'm a tool, which would mean I'd have to grab some Goo Gone or something... So much work to do. >_<

It's not that much work I removed the RS10 stickers along with all the ones on the frame. My brifters did come loose the other day at the end of the ride. Didn't notice it until my rear brake was locking up and had no idea what was going on. Then I felt the brifter move and had to re tighten them back and adjust the brakes.

Westmass,
Did you get the Kysyrium wheels at the shop? I have the 2012 CAAD 10-4 and they come with Fulcrum Racing 7 wheelsets. Like the look myself and the ride just cannot be beat. Great bicycle for the price.

I bought the wheels on recommendation of a friend and am selling the fulcrum racing 7. The swap of the wheels and seatpost dropped the bike weight by over a pound.

The pound was the swapped seatpost AND wheels.

The seatpost is Uno Carbon Fiber zero offset

Very nice setup but you went with SPD pedals. Was this to use MTB shoes? I'm sure you have plans to upgrade later?

While I know there are a lot of people on here who have a lot of money to spend on things (and some who don't!), I don't generally replace things that "ain't broke." this is the first new bike I've had since I was a child, and I ride regularly. My last bike was a 91 cannondale from a yard sale that I rode for ten years. I have a pair of specialized MTB shoes and SPD pedals that were free hand me downs from my dad. I plan on riding them until they fall apart and then maybe I'll get a road specific shoe/pedal.

I know it doesn't really match or look cool, but that's what I'm working with for now and I am fine with it.
