2002 CAAD5 from 7UP/Team Nutra-Fig.
All Dura-Ace 7700 with Boyd 38 carbon clinchers.

Still a good ride, especially with the recent addition of the Boyd's.

New CAAD10 build in progress. Pics coming later.

I picked up a 2012 CAAD10 5 with FSA Gossamer at the end of the season and I took it out today for only the 2nd time since I got it and am getting some clicking when out of the saddle and only when pushing down on the left pedal. It's at almost any intensity, is a distinct click (not creak) and the pattern is somewhat inconsistent. It's tough to pin down since I can only create the sound when on the bike. So basically it's an assumption based on some of the issues I've heard from others.

I had a weird clicking noise on my bike, similar in that it was related to a certain pedal position as you describe although mine was consistent. It ended up being the little tail on the derailleur cable (I think?) was sticking out and it was clicking against my pedal (or crank, or shoe, don't remember exactly).

A quick little tuck of that cable and the click was gone. Took me longer than I'd like to admit to find it though...

Interesting question, dmagic17. I have noticed my bike makes some funny noises when I'm on the trainer and spinning fairly easy. I'm taking my bike in for a tune-up in about a week, so hopefully it can get sorted out.

It also sounds like the chain is rubbing on the front derailleur even when I'm in the middle of the cassette.

I've got the 2013 10 5, so 105 components. On my front derailleur, there is something of a "half click". It seems like the chain rubs a bit if I'm on the big front ring and the big half of the rear cassette. If I downshift the left shifter part way, there is a tiny click and adjustment of the front derailleur and the noise goes away. Same thing if I'm in the small half of the cassette, I can click the front derailleur up part way and the noise goes away.

Quite frankly, I'm not sure if this is an intended fine trim functionality, or if it means my bike is not properly tuned. Something to ask my LBS, if I remember...

EDIT: I found this link after a quick search. I guess this is intended functionality for the 105, but I'm not sure whether it's in other Shimano components as well.

That's the trim function.

Sweet ride, just ditch the metal cages.

Lean back 03-13-13 10:10 PM

Anyone know what are the largest tires that will fit on a stock CAAD 10 5? 25mm or will 28mm fit?

jtwilson 03-13-13 10:14 PM

28mm will not fit.

qcpmsame 03-14-13 05:30 AM

All the CAAD 10 frames are identical in the dimensions, 25 is the largest that will fit well on my CAAD, Gatorskins on it now, the brake and the fork clearance is very close with the 25s on it.

Nice. I remeber the Easton seatpost. I think a matching Easton stem would be a nice touch though. Are the bars Ritchey? Perhaps some DA pedals to go with the group.
Overall, killer cadd.

Thanks for the confirmation. :thumb:

Hopefully THSdrummer's chain rub can be fixed with just that. I never knew about the trim function until I noticed it a couple hundred miles into riding the new bike.

Fantastic, thank you! I have a spot reserved on Monday for a tune-up. Hopefully I'll get it back Tuesday with no noise. When I first bought it, it made a similar noise, he corrected it, but it came back pretty quickly. I hope he knows how the trim function works (as I am unfamiliar with it) so as to eliminate the noise for a significant amount of miles.

The college student organization I'm apart of is hosting a series of bike clinics, including maintenance. The first is tonight. Maybe I'll learn what I need to learn.

Nagrom_ 03-14-13 12:10 PM

Alright guys. Need some expert caad advice. I'm lacing up a new wheelset for my caad10, because my current wheelset isn't stiff enough, getting really bad brake rub that pretty much only goes away if I leave the calipers damn near open. front and back, front during high speed/windy descents and hard turns in general, back during sprints and climbs, or generally anything OTS. I'm too heavy/strong for the lasers in the rear.

New wheelset will be 28/32, 2x/3x, sapim lasers up front, wheelsmith DB14s in the rear. H+Son Archetypes to some hub. Don't quite know yet. Depending on how much I get for the current set, will dictate what I can spend on the new hubset.

Question is: Red hubs? I think it will look good with a few more red splashes. Thoughts?

Everybody does red...do pink Chiris King.

Nagrom_ 03-14-13 12:52 PM

Ew. Lol. Wouldn't be able to bring my self to do that.

jtwilson 03-14-13 01:31 PM

I say no to red hubs. Perhaps red cable ends, but if you go any further with the red splashes, you will over-do it. Next thing you know it will have red bolts everywhere, red cable housing, then red hoods and 6 different shades of red. I say Silver or black CK hubs.

Nagrom_ 03-14-13 01:53 PM

Or just red hubs. I'm pretty conservative with color. Silver may be an option though.

Ross11 03-14-13 01:59 PM

Nagrom, what tape is that?

Lizardskins DSP 2.5.

Great texture. A little too thick though, gonna try the 1.8 next.

Thanks. It's an Easton EA70 post. Pretty basic but reliable. No squeaks or creaks. The bars are Ritchey Pro Biomax. I don't care for those bends, I prefer the traditional round drops. The bars were on sale at the time but they get the job done. I'm planning to switch to Look or Shimano pedals. When the CAAD10 project is completed, I'll probably upgrade this bike a bit. The 10-speed upgrade is a strong bet. The 9-speed has been flawless. I never had to turn a derailleur screw or barrel adjuster. It just keeps working and the drivetrain is silent.

Any ideas or recommendations are welcome.

Damn, you noticed. I have a carbon cage, just been too lazy to change it.
