Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Help buying a Trek 2.1

Hi, I am thinking about purchasing a Trek 2.1 as an entry level bike so I can get into cycling. Had a couple of questions first. (1) I found a used one that I like for about $750 that has about 4000 miles on it. Is that a decent deal or should I keep looking. Also, are there any major advantages to buying new? I've already rode the bike as a friend owns it and a lbs says that they will fit it to me if I buy my accessories there. Thanks for the help in advance. Much appreciated

Oh and it is a 2010 Trek 2.1

Buying new gives you a warranty and usually free tuneups for a year. On the other hand 750 is a great deal if it's in good condition, if you can do your own maintenance or are willing to learn. It sounds like you wouldn't have to worry too much about anything being wrong with it if you're buying it from a friend, seeing as he knows you know where to find him.

The 2010 model has (5600) 105 and the the 2011 has (5700) 105. Other than that it's the same bike. But warranty is very important with trek since they don't always take care of 2nd owners.

Last year in April, I got a technically-new 2009 Trek 2.1 with 25 miles on it for $750, but it was still used.

But you should check the threads with the Trek Warranty issue, like other people said. Unfortunately, I never saw them before I got my bike, but fortunately, my bike has never had any issues.

I wouldn't be. You might check the cassette and chain rings for wear, and make sure it runs smoothly, ie the bearings weren't hosed out.
