Since a few kitty pictures have surfaced...here's my feel good story of the evening...it's been quite a night.
Gianni is home...alive.
Sunday April 3rd was the last time we remembered seeing our cat, Gianni. Inquiries in the neighborhood yielded no solid leads and we suspected that he had become food for the coyotes or foxes that are known to roam our neighborhood.
Tonight, around 8:00, we were sitting in the family room watching TV when the phone rang. My wife picked it up...and after a few moments said, with excitement in her voice, "Gianni?! Really?". (No...it wasn't Gianni on the other end of the line!). A young lady, Christine, was calling to let us know that Gianni had shown up at their house with his collar still intact. Kati could barely contain her excitement and then amazement as Christine started to describe where they were...Gianni had managed to wander over 18 miles from home and had to have crossed many busy roads and highways. For those of you familiar with Austin, Gianni had managed to make it to just south of Mansfield Dam...on the Lake Travis side of 620!
I plugged the address into my phone's GPS and my daughter and I practically sprinted to the car to go retrieve him. The whole way out we just kept commenting about how amazing it was that he had gone so far.
We arrived at Christine's house to find her and a guy friend sitting on their front porch, petting Gianni, who was just casually sitting at their feet. The car spooked him slightly and he started to slink away but as soon as I turned off the car and got out, he came walking over and rubbed against my and my daughter's legs. We thanked Christine profusely, got back into the car for the drive home. Gianni was purring the whole time and occasionally panting with excitement. He was sitting on my daughter's lap most of the way back and each time we stopped for a light, he'd stand up and look around to see if we were home.
Finally we arrived home and brought him inside. He said hello to my wife and my other daughter and immediately parked himself where he's normally fed. He appears to have dropped maybe 4-5 pounds through this ordeal, so we started him off slowly with food...although over the course of about 45 minutes he ended up finishing a full can of food.
Obviously, we're quite excited by his return. We all had been missing him very much although we didn't talk much about him being gone. We still hadn't broken our habit of looking at the window next to the front door during the 5 weeks he was missing, the spot he normally stood when he wanted to come in. Of course...we were all hoping one day he'd just appear.
Yeah...he's just a cat...but he's pretty special...and now, even more so.
