Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bikes: Yes, I ride an aluminum Trek!

-I use SPD pedals on my road bike
-I use cycling sandals and love them
-I come close to bonking on hot/humid climates and lived the first 30 years of my life in Puerto Rico
-I'm a mechanical engineer and can't adjust my derailleurs
-Wife pretty much obligated me to buy a road bike along with one for her back in 2009 and now I'm addicted
-I stuff myself with beer and cheeseburgers after my night rides
-I'm mash the pedals too much and have a low cadence
-I'm slow on flats
-I'm terrified of numb-nuts

I moo at cows (who doesn't!).
If I have to go through a puddle and nobody's watching, I unclip both feet, stick my legs out straight in front of me and yell "weeeeeeeeee!" as I go through.

I used to be an elitist roadie that never waved, nodded head, or otherwise acknowleged someone on a mountain bike riding across the road in the opposite direction. (I'm happily not that guy anymore!!!)

When I was a road racer, I could sit on couch and just stare at my clean racing bike for an hour (or more) propped up against the coffee table.

Been riding for 27 years and still ride w/ valve caps on (road bike, MTB, or hybrid)!

id rather be racing motocross then riding bikes to stay in shape.... but dont have to money to support the first one...
Im spending wayyyy too much money on my first road bike.
ive never shaved my legs because im fearful of the bear legs i already have coming back 10x worse.
as a kid i used to ride a bike everyday, once i got a motorcycle i cut my bike riding down by a ton.
for being skinny people think im in better shape then i actually am, or have ever been.

Funny that you mention this. Ppl always think that because one's "slim" that equals being in shape. Most likely my bmi is greater than his/hers although I look slimmer....

Confession: felt bad-ass after taking a spill yesterday on an icy patch of the MUP (climbing)

I've never actually crashed, and the fact that I will eventually scares the **** out of me.
I've only driven a car 2 times in my entire life, I tell people it's because I almost hit a person on the second time, but it's really because I'm horrified of the idea that driving would take away the reason I fell in love with riding my bike.
My bike is the only reason I'm alive
I am, in fact, a hipster
I can't stand other hipsters, or fixies, despite the last confession
Sometimes I think about getting hit by stupid drivers just to punish them
I don't race because I'm horrified of doing badly
I ride alone 99% of the time because I'm afraid no one would be able to handle how slow I am
I'm more than 25 pounds over my ideal weight, because I'm too lazy to actually exercise
I read the first 34 pages of this thread debating actually posting

My coworkers think I am fast (being female and 2x their age is probably why) at averaging 16 mph on rides. I don't always tell them that I can't make this without stopping :-(

It has been one of the nicest warmest fall/winter seasons without snow here in Michigan, and I have not been on my bike since Early October. Yet I have logged many hours in gym on the exercise bike with the fat tractor seat, and on the treadmill.

Wow, some pretty heavy stuff going down. As long as no one admits to putting a tire on without lining it up with the valve stem. That would be going too far...

The fear of driving could be overcome'd if you wanted to by seeking counseling. But it sounds like you really don't have a need to drive anyways so why bother, but it would be worth counseling BEFORE you ever decide you need to drive again.

I'm not sure what you mean by being lazy, it sounds like you ride virtually everyday, that's not being too lazy to exercise...you're exercising every day! And if you ride virtually everyday I doubt if you're all that slow, maybe not a racer speed type of rider, but better then the weekend good weather only warrior! And if your avatar is a pic of you, you don't look overweight.

I am absolutely torn with guilt. We have a great LBS here in my town. I own aluminum, steel, and carbon bikes. I wanted to own a titanium bike to complete the 'collection'. But I could never afford the full price of titanium of the better name brands. I don't even think my LBS has any ti bikes in stock anyway. So...after much study and consideration, I bought a titanium bike 'on line' [for about half the cost of a Litespeed, Merlin, or Lynskey etc].
But now I'm so afraid someone from the LBS will see me riding the titanium bike around town, ha. It's a bad economy and I think the LBS owner is struggling some too. So, to all LBS owners out there, my deepest apologies...but a guy has to do what a guy has to do [right?].

Hey, I used to 'moo' at the cows too, ha. Figured I was nuts. No animal ever responded when I tried to mimick them however...but you know what does work some...'baby talk'. Still trying to use that on my ex-wife's lawyer...'not working'.

Winning. [not].

I feel guilty about the bike I ride whenever I'm passed by someone on a [much] cheaper bike.

If I see someone on a bike ahead of me, I have to do everything in my power to pass them. Some of my best passes have been kids on tricycles.

Bikes: '10 Cervelo S2, '12 Cervelo P3, '13 Cervelo S5, '12 Wilier GT, 15 Salsa Warbird 3, 09 Trek XO2

I started riding again in July of 2011...first time since I was a kid. Since then I have:

1. Ditched my brand new hybrid after 2 months for a brand new road bike (wife wouldn't ride trails with me so I became a roadie) at another $900 in cost and told the aforementioned wife, when asked, that it wasn't a new bike, I simply "bent the bars cause they're easier for road use" (she knows...the demon! she knows...)

2. Spent entirely too much money on clothing and accessories. Do I need 4 pairs of gloves and 2 helmets and 3 pair of shoes? NO. Did I buy them? yes.

3. Cut gluten out of my diet not for nutritional and health reasons, or even an allergy... but because thats what I read one of the pro teams did and dammit, that's good enough for me.

4. Didn't test drive the first bike I bought back in July (hybrid) because I was embarrassed that I would fall over, damage it, and they'd laugh and snicker and make me buy it.

5. When I get to a puddle I slow down to a crawl and gingerly go through it, because I don't want to get my cassette or BB wet and dirty, but when asked if I ride in the rain and slop I say "Hell yes, it's just water, for pete's sake"!!!

6. I wish I had started riding again 20 years ago.

I'm judging posters based on what they're written here, knowing I'm no better and in a lot of ways worse. I'm moving somewhere hot to lose weight rather than riding more.

Redundant. An alarm goes off in Walnut Creek if a rider attempts to install clipless pedals.
