50 miles, 3500 feet of vertical, I actually dropped the Freds on Pulaski Highway vs. them dropping me, which is a hopeful sign that I may not be as beyond hope as I feared. Knee didn't really start getting cranky until the last 7-8 miles, and we did some reasonably brisk hammering on the last 15 miles of the little group ride I joined today. Cold didn't bother me at all, 15-25ºF for the whole ride. You dress right, it's fine.

It's only in the mid-30s this afternoon. But I shall HTFU and ride anyway, because I'm a serious cyclist.

It was actually a nice day to ride. You should try it sometime Gomer.

I like cold rides but 14° is just a little colder than optimum. Sure standing or falling H2O is bound to be in a solid state, which is nice, but there's a good chance that your boogers will be in a frozen state with every inhalation, which sucks.

27°, now that's a nice ride temp!

We haven't had winter temps here for a while. The frogs are out en masse and they were nearly deafening as I passed by the ditches, wetlands and ponds last night.

dstrong 02-12-12 01:12 PM

Before yesterday, my previous "cold ride" was 46-degrees at Tahoe...overcast, damp with some rain. Yesterday I started my ride under sunny skies with the temp at 48 degrees. I started at 3:00 and just kept extending my ride...and then figured out I was going to be cutting it close with daylight (sunset at 6:15). Clouds rolled in around 5:30, it got darker and the temp dropped to around 42. I made it home in virtual darkness at 6:20 and the last mile or two were pretty nippy. I had insulated PI leg warmers, wool socks, base layer, bib shorts, SS jersey, arm warmers (which I mostly had down) and a wind layer (that flapped in the breeze). I also had a knit cap under my helmet that covered my ears. It was perfect with the sun out but slightly not enough once the sun disappeared.

I found that my bib shorts provide no insulation at all and that my hips get cold. Since I don't ride in the cold that much it's not worth it to buy a pair of thicker shorts...so I'm thinking next time I'll throw a pair of lycra running shorts over my bib shorts for another layer of insulation.

I ride when it's in the 20s, when necessary (which thankfully isn't very often). It beats not riding at all, but it's hardly "nice" or enjoyable.

So there's a road race in podunk, OR.

How silly is it to mark the elevations in meters? Pffft!

Low 20's and overcast here, I just can't motivate.

sbxx1985 02-12-12 02:01 PM

Me neither.

For you warm weather people, this is the yard two minutes ago.

Just snow showers. We can still see the grass, but it's 15 degrees.

Hey, get off my deck! Seriously, where do you live? I'm in Gunbarrel, and it looks just like that.

mvnsnd 02-12-12 04:38 PM

It looks almost the same here. About 3-4 inches of snow and more flakes falling now. 65 minutes on the trainer again today. Yee ha.

BillyD 02-12-12 04:49 PM

We got nuttin in the hudson valley.

datlas 02-12-12 05:10 PM

Roads here just not safe to ride on today.

I went swimming instead. My swim times (2:30 for 100m) suck even more than my cycling abilities.

wut

I don't recall ever having thought, "Man, my hips are cold."

If my hips are cold, all of me is cold--particularly my feet and hands.

rjones28 02-12-12 06:13 PM

A cold snowy night is a good night for beef stew.

dstrong 02-12-12 06:25 PM

Lance placed 2nd in the Panama half marathon earlier today.
