Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bikes: how long have you got?

Second biggest monthly trade deficit recorded
There has been a half billion dollar blow-out in Australia's monthly trade deficit.

The bill for Australia's imports has eclipsed the nations export earnings in July by $2.7 billion when seasonably adjusted.

Looks newest entry into the lightweight pedal market. The cleats are slightly different to traditional Looks, full carbon body...pretty smick looking units actually....115gms each or 95gms for the Ti ones.....I thought, new bike...new pedals...but by the time SBR get their act together I'll probably be looking for 'lithium carbide solar panels for my Look single seat hover unit'......I wouldn't care so much, but i was silly enough to pay for 'em when i paid for the rest o' the bike....sob

Where can I see these things? Cipo? Petacchi?

You've got 10sp D-A and you're not using the SL pedal? Interesting.....

There pretty new on the market...i thought i'd give them a go...I haven't actually seen anyone with them yet...it's a bit hard to spot what pedals the pros are using.....I get dizzy looking...lol....presumably all the look sponsored pro's will be in on the act. Why would you think I would use the SL's cos I've got DA 10?....I've always been happy with Look's so haven't really seen any reason to change...it seemed natural to just upgrade to the newest model when i was getting the new machine....d'ya think i should reconsider?.(s'pecially since SBR don't look like coming up with these things this millenium)

I'm biased. Big time Time (see the pun....he he...) convert, but I baulked at the new Impacts (plastic cleat...WTF??) and bought the SLs. In hindsight, I should've gone for the Times.

I don't want to start a Time/Look war...this thread is long enough, but Time have been far and away the best pedal for my aging anatomy.

Geez, I used first generation Ultegra clipless pedals with plastic cleats for years and they were fine. Squeaked like a stuck pig eventually, but were fine! *laugh* I currently ride with my XTR pedals and Sidi Dominator shoes, so I'd be looking to pony up this Summer for some road specific *****. Sidi Genius shoes are my number one pick - no idea about pedals. I like the Times in theory, but I'm still shoppin' around. Having accounts with a few large overseas wholesalers does have it's downsides.

As for forks, I've been basically happy with my True Tempers. Going around a corner at 50kph today, I did notice a little torsional flex, but it's impossible to know whether thats from the front wheel or the handlebars, and as it wasn't alarming or anything, I'm not to concerned. The Looks 'look' okay, but I like straight bladed forks, just for 'looks'.

BTW, you fellas all need to help me convince Nev that what he really needs is a Tephra! He wants one, he just doesn't know it yet

---------

https://www.look-keo.com/html_us/frameset.htm

Found some info on the Keo. Looks like a cool, no BS pedal. Buggered if I'm paying A$299 for a set, but they don't look half bad.

A side note - Notice how this pedal seems to be targetted directly at the Dura-Ace pedal? Most people don't realise that Shimano is first and foremost an Aluminium forging company, which is why there's no carbon in their line of bike components, and why other companies are trying to kick their bums by spewing out all this CF stuff. Innerestin' huh.

No one I know cares, so I have to tell you guys:

After all my sh1ting on, for months and months about Cervelo and the EFBe test,
blah blah blah, I finally bought the steel Cervelo SuperProdigy. Comes with a
Columbus Muscle fork.

I'm wondering if it is actually Columbus Ultrafoco steel because, despite Cervelo
telling me several times via email that it was the lightest steel frame on the
market, this 58cm frame is about 1690g (I took the scales to the shop to
weigh it before I bought it), which is not exactly super-light. I don't really
mind at all; in fact I would've been a bit tentative riding a sub 1500g steel
frame. I've heard of guys breaking their Colnago Master X-Lights -- which reminds me,
have you guys seen the Colnago warehouse sale site?

Colnagos, dirt cheap: https://www.colnago.com.au

No wonder the Cervelo Prodigy passed the EFBe test, it's a pretty chunky frame.

It would be a Foco based steel, absolutely. Whether or not it's specifically drawn for Cervelo depends on how many frames they pump out. It's entirely possible it's 'proprietary'.

3.7lbs for a traditional 58cm frame seems ballpark. I wouldn't compare anything to a Colnago though man - there's nothing quality about a Colnago ( sorry Colnago owners, just my opinion ). The steel Colnagos have never been even remotely light, and the steel Colnagos always unravel at the lugs. That says one thing to me, I'll let you guess what that is. Also, it kinda makes me chuckle seeing Americans buy Italian frames, when the quality of US framebuilding surpassed the Italians 20 years ago. I think it's called 'buying a myth'

Read Don Ferris of Anvil Bikes comments on the EFBe test if you want a real insight into how meaningless they are. Tell us what you really think, Thylacine!

I was talking to one of the guys at Gran Prix Cycles, who was saying similar things about Italian and US frames, and I was pretty surprised. He was basically saying the Italians had got by on reputation for many years (but Gran Prix are a TREK dealer). Although, I've gotta admit I was considering one of the Colnago Master X Lights for $1800 on https://www.colnago.com.au .

Did you know about this? They are almost worth it just for the looks

Ok, now i need some components for the Kervello (that's how I'm gunna pronounce it, because I OWN ONE, and I'm a closet bogan).

Anyone know where I can get some reasonablty priced, Shimano 9 speed STIs?

Cecil Walker sell 9 speed Dura-Ace levers for $522, but they don't have any.

g'day 531,

Congrats on the cervelo...bars-tard!....s'pose we'll need to be ridin' the streets at 4am to get a look at it?......email carl at bike pro...he might be able to help you with 9sp stuff. You might be able to pick some up cheap, cos everyone wants 10sp
https://www.bikepro.com.au/index.html

BTW...why 9 spd?....you can get a full DA 10 gruppo brand new for $1800...there's some peckerheads on the bicycle australia classified site wanting more than that for 2nd hand!.......

cheers,

Skinny?......never thought of skinny as being an issue for 'roadies'.....lol....if you are talking about 'strength & reliablity'.....I haven't heard of any issues with the Shimano 10 sp chain, 9nor have I had any)...campy had heaps of issues with theirs when it first came out, but i guess shimano learned from campy's mistakes......I've put 5000 'hard' km in on the 486 (only race on it, not much training/spinning) & the DA 10 hasn't missed a beat....you can't beat the brakes...Shimano brakes used to be a bit ordinary compared to the 'spaghetti sauce' mob.....not anymore, WWWAAAYYYY better,

cheers,

I've seen three guys from Richmond Cyclery (you know, "bike shop boys") bust three chains in recent months, and stupid me has thought: "Jeez, must them new 'dan-fangled' chains that are about half the width of my old track chain."

...this from a man who also thinks 'time' pedals are good?. Hitchy's first rule of cycling. 'Thou shalt not put any gruppo on thy bike that sounds like it could be a spaghetti sauce".....lol
