Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I happen to have just that very thing. I just don't have any money for the required conversion

I'm converting my old steelo to fixed/free combo cruiser. Hey how do you confuse a seppo? Sell him a fixy and throw in back pedal brakes as a free upgrade Any, returning from my sad little digression...

Aaah yes, needs a new coat of paint so its needs to be totally stripped down. Off with the trusty Super-Record rear and Ultegra front dereilleurs, Omega cranks (who was it that was complaining about modern bendy cranks a while ago? These are the old straight variety 170mm) and on with a 48 and new cranks. Then its just a new rear hub with fixed on one side and free on the other (16 or 17, just can't make up my mind. I should seek expert advice. Maybe Top Gun School of Racing would have an answer for me).

So to be a true fixy does it need to have cotter pins? Is the old Concor leather chiq or too glam? Would it be considered posing to retain the original Suntour ARX brakes, or should I replace them with modern 'retro' style brakes?

I have that Systeme U jersey you could wear with it to complete the retro look.

Dun need it: I have an original Europa Cycles jersey in poxy green with red sleeves and white armbands and collar. It's so ugly and uncool its back in vogue

Oh yeah, and it smells pretty retro too

Hey, badsac

Sorry to keep asking you all these prices but how much did you get your Specialized for?

Gonna see what my local can do one for. I'm considering one, if I get a good price.

However I noticed the Specialized site doesnt have the Roubaix with Ultegra 10spd spec in 05 for whatever reason...

And you got the 54cm frame right?

No worries Scoz. I got an 04 Roubaix Comp for $4000 on the nose. Yeah, it was the 54. Good fit for me at 5 10 with long legs.

Yeah, they buggered about with the components this year. The Elite/Comp/Pro have the same frame this year, with the Elite being 105/Ultegra at around $3900 retail (for BX folk). Comp having Ultegra 10/Dura Ace for about $4800. Pro having full Dura Ace for a whack more again. The 05 Elite, still the good frame, just with a few 105 pieces, so it could be the go if you like the Roubaixes. They all might be a bit dear though still yeah?

Aahh yes, the great men

Michael Hubner, two times world 200 meters sprint champion, was
eliminated in the quarter-finals by Australia's Gary Neiwand, who beat him
in two straight heats. The two, who once trained together but have been on
bad terms for the last two years, nearly collided as they entered the last
lap of the first heat, which the Australian won with a spectacular manuever
off the final turn.

As they crossed the line, Neiwand, who beat Hubner in the 1993 final in
Norway, stuck a finger up at the German. But it was Hubner who was warned
and fined by the organizers for "gestures made before and during the race."

"He hates my guts and I hate his guts, all the cycling world knows about
it, but we're professional athletes and when it comes to cycling we should
put that behind us," said Neiwand. Afterwards, Hubner grudgingly accepted
Neiwand's offer of a handshake.

I remember that!! That was awesome!!

I went to a one-off sprint match at Northcote between Neiwand and Pate in 1989 with Patey resplendent in his World's jersey. I think in match two he hit the deck after a tangle on the back straight at about 70kmh.....sparks and everything. Leather helmet meets concrete track....

I had a pair of Duegi's in the early 90's, but they were leather/composite. I don't recall flipping anyone off though.

Were your thighs the size of tree trunks and covered in veins?

I remember Kenrick Tucker attempting to impersonate a real human being after one the Commonwealth Games sprint events. Sadly he failed. The guys legs were so fargin big he couldn't walk, it was more like waddling. I wonder if guys like that qualify for a Handicapped space at the shopping centre?

Not quite that big. But being of Russian ancestry, I can bulk up real big very quickly. I'll never be a little whippet of a road biker. I think 90kg is as low as I'll ever be again, even if I get lean. I'll leave the freakish size to our good mate 53-11...

Bikes: a few

while we are on track (actual cycling talk), anyone know where to get track chainrings in a 110 BCD? My bike came with a 48 ring on the Truvativ Elita crankset but 110 is not easy to get for track purposes.

What do you want? I'm the resource for stuff from the US cheap, and I don't take a big markup for my mates on the FOO.

Any actually seen pics of that froot-loop? I reckon he really looks like Bill Gates, circa 1980

I need a 50 and/or 52 ring in a 110 BCD, 1/8" wide. Pretty sure it's a 5-bolt pattern, I'll check tonight.
