Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I gotta say....for some reason I insist on having an 11, even on my 8 speed bikes, which
means I've got 11,12,13,14,15,17,19,21.

I really miss the 16 when I'm grinding into a head wind. Sometimes, changing
between the 15 to the 17 kills me -- too big a change in rpm

Like Greg Lemond sez: "You never stop suffering in cycling. You just go faster."

I'd agree with that.

SRAM is going to take over for MTB gear. I don't see a benefit of one over the other for road bikes.

I prefer Campag for dereilleurs, but I quite like the Shimano STI setup.

As for chain/cluster/rings I hate all of the modern crap because it just doesn't last, despite regular maintenance and cleaning. Give me a good, solid Regina cluster and chain any day.

Shimano bottom bracket and hollowtech crankset for now, but Campy will bounce back.

Brakes. I want to try out a set of those superlight brakes that someone posted here a couple of months back. The red anodised exxy ones

On the road bike it's Campy for me, I just liked it from the beginning and it's pointless trying to switch even if Dura-Ace is awesome. I like the thumb shifting on the Campy stuff too much to change anyway.

When I was young I loved Suntour's ARX stuff (otherwise known as poor man's Campy ) until I dropped the bike on the dereiller. They must've made the thing out of tissue paper and spit coz it had to be replaced with Campy Super Record, naturally. That lasted 80000km!!!

I was in Tamworth a couple of years ago and they had a psychic expo at the hotel I stayed at. I had an overwhelming urge to go in and say "Here I am, but I suppose you were expecting me".

I successfully fought the urge.

Hoi. My mate finally got his Orbea all these months after we ordered our bikes at the same time. Nice looing thing for a cheapie. It's got a problem though. Everytime he shifts onto the big ring on the back the spokes make a dinging noise. Turns out it happens whether he's pedalling or not, so I'm pretty sure it's the rear deraileur touching the spokes. The thing has Shimano R500 wheels and Tiagra rear deraleur. The rear deraileur is shifting properly, so I'm not sure what kind of adjustment we can do to it. Fool wouldn;t listen to me and bought it from the next town over, so it's a bit of a pain to get it back to the shop to get them to look at it. So any ideas?

tighten the trim adjuster screw thingy on the derailleur. It's gotta be the derailleur hittin' the spokes.

Ha! A p!ssing contest I can win... 1052km since 1 January.

Started *and* finished the Giro Tasmania 1000, plus rode to and from. Hell, I'm so sore I can hardly get up out the chair. And I am still so wired despite around seven hours sleep in the last 75, I can't drop off. Different from this morning when I was asleep on the side of the road!
