yeah, that's why I use it, I look my bike to look good !!!

3 parts mineral turps (odorless if you can get it) and 1 part motor oil. That's it, that's the trick to chain lube, mix it heavier or lighter as you experiment but it works. Shake it up in a spray can, spray it on to clean the whole chain, then layer it on again to cover the links, wipe off the excess with a rag and ride. I top up maybe once a week or two at the most depending on how much you ride.

I'll look for my ProGold leftovers this weekend.

I did indeed.

The training bike (Mach1800) has proven to be such good value for money, and I couldn't be happier. So when the LBS rang and sed he had a Mach2200 in-store at such a ridiculous price I just had to lay my testicles on the line. I'm sure the missus won't mind too much when I explain how much I saved :D No really! I did save heaps... honey... put the axe down... now... please...

And thanks for the werd on the 540's sacman.

Question without notice to the bike builders or metalurgists among you:

Why do Gitane finish the welds on the cheaper bike (makes it look bloody fantastic) and not their top of the line budget racer? Is it because finishing adds heat which might stuff up a weld/weaken a joint or the metal around the joint?

What sort of motor oil is good? Should I lash out and buy a synthetic like Mobil1, or go for a premium organic like Valvoline, or just get any crap I can find at a good price? Is viscocity important (given that the mineral turps is going to change all that anyway)?

Maybe they wanna hide the cheaper welds:p

How much was it?

It's a joke, isn't it? We pay about 20 bucks for 4L of motor oil, but $10 for 100ml of bike lube!!

And don't get me started on tyres!!
I just paid $130 for car tyres that will probably last me 70,000km. How does that compare to bike tyres?

bugger that, We (seppos) are taking over this thread, its been going on way to long.
"Aussie" in the title will be changed to a reference to Austin, Texas (home of
LANCE ARMSTRONG the GREATEST CYCLIST WHO EVER LIVED.
instead of cricket and tennis its gonna be Bocce and Hoops.

I'm a bit slow on the uptake but I think I've been accused of being a seppo!
Bloody cheek! :D

I'm guessing the the cheaper bike didn't have pretty welds to start with, so they've been disguised. Of course, if it was steel, Tiger would be able to go on about the difference between wire welding and fillet brazing.

So it's the last Friday of the month. Any of the Melbourne crew doing the Critical Mass thing tonight?

No. That's for ferals. Not retired bike racers living on past glories.

geekylucas 01-27-05 05:14 PM

Cool. I've never done a CM before. About time I gave it a go I reckon.

Although, I think the weather may be sh1te. =\

Jeezuz Hitchy, why don't you just come out and say what you're really thinking :p

Critical Mass doesn't have any relevance. It was always about "taking back the streets". Cyclists who like to live know that it's easier and safer for all concerned to integrate with whatever is around them rather than causing friction and anger.

Someone teach that boy to swear on here.

Hey Geek, you won't find this nearly as funny as everyone else, but we were moved to FOO once. I just read the description for "Road Cycling":

The road bike is the most efficient machine known to man. There is nothing like riding a nice road bike, on a nice road. Chat it up with other roadies in our road cycling forum.

LOL. And if you were bored enough to read the whole thread from start to end there would be this really wierd section where everyone started talking about FOO and raising questions like "How the fark did we end up in FOO?". Totally meaningless and confusing, seeing as how we're back in Road (as if we'd never been anywhere else) :)

geekylucas 01-27-05 05:25 PM

FOO?

I'd much rather be at the BAR.

Damned astrisks make this thread look untidy. You'd think he'd go back and edit it so that the asterisks were begoned.

BTW, Sunday is on. 7:00am, usual place, 5mins leeway, bring superpatch kit ($4.00? $6.00?). Make sure that there is a vodafone sponsored event too :)

I'll let you know tomorrow if there's any reason I can't make it.

By the way, FUBAR is totally different than FOO BAR. Pharqued up beyond all recognition = very bad. Bar = very good.

New Strine for the day? Far cough! [edit] As in, "I've heard enough seppo bashing for one day!"

What do you think guys, is he in? Remember, anyone who says yes will be ridiculed for caring. Your general apathy alone will be taken as a sign of confirmation.

any but synthetic probably is better if it is supposed to attract less dirt and gunk and is "Brock-approved". If it's good enough for the dunny door (that's for the seppo's), it's good enough for the bike. I've used all types of oil and all have worked fine. It's so cheap anyway, get something half decent.

Thylacine 01-27-05 06:30 PM

Ooooh! A bike question! Me! Me!

*cough*

With Aluminium bikes, you can do what is called a 'wash weld' ( aka Cannondale ) instead of the regular fish scale type look. Wash welding is cheap and nasty, but from a mass production POV makes sense. Getting nice, even fish scale type beads ain't exactly easy, so if you do them, you're basically advertising your quality in a way. ( at least in the eyes of the consumers, anyway ) Also, roadies don't like fish scale look welds as much as mtbers do, so it's not seen as much as a selling point.
