Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I've kept my Continental for sentimental reasons as well. It was my first bike, purchased in 1976, and I rode it to death.

The Chicago Schwinns hold more status for some because they were manufactured in the original Schwinn factory, before they moved . . . or something like that. Those C&V guys know the story.

Schwinn Varslty and Continental bicycles were unfathomable pieces of cast iron ****. They were everywhere when I was in high school in the early 1970s (class of '75). I can't wax nostalgic about them.

They're calling for 3-5" here tomorrow. More snow. Thank God, the 3 FEET in the yard, that's not enough.

It was so nice today I got my snow bike ready for tomorrow before looking at the weather report. Oops. Same weather predicted here. I might have to ride anyway.
I guess it could be worse. I could be as tall as Bailey in this snow.

There are still tons of Varsinentals around and they're even more absurd now, yet there are still loads of people trying to sell them for near their original MSRP. Do people actually pay that much or are these just deluded sellers?

...I have to peruse the CL in my performance of volunteer duties at the co-op.

They seem to stay on CL a long time, then vanish, whether from a more realistic offer or the discovery of that one guy who knows less than you.

I sold my old Schwinn. It was too big for me. Not a bad riding lump of iron otherwise.

In other bike related news, I did get a ride in on the weekend. 25km on my old Diamondback MTB converted to drop bars with the kid seat on the back. Took gnome jnr to a coffee shop in the next town and back. treated us to a triple chocolate mousse cake, myself a latte and a frothed milk for gnome jnr. It was good.

Oh yes, this.

https://www.strava.com/activities/113765092

Did the Austin Marathon half yesterday. Already had patellar tendonitis from squats when I started, so it was a really fun run. Still, PRed by nearly 12 minutes, and had more engine power that I couldn't use because I couldn't bear to make my knees bend any faster.

Running is still awesome. So awesome.

After I took the pic of the tree, I rode around and through the park about a dozen times so my bike and I could hit every pine cone, twig, and patch of mud. The wider tires are great! If I hadn't been trying to be sure I had enough energy to ride home and if I'd had a way to track my mileage, I'd be out there still. I can't wait to go back another day and then move out onto trails. Seriously, it's the most fun I've ever had that didn't involve sex.
