Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Lotta gig traction. I think me and Uncle Steve will be playing weekly by the Fall, one place wants us twice a month. Thinking about calling our act this:

I am keeping my day job (riding my road bicycle). But fewer miles. Guitar playing in bars until midnight and road cycling aren't so compatible. It's less the guitar playing and more the loading in and out of the friggin P.A. crap that gets to you.

That's what roadies and groupies are for!!

Anyway, well done Pcad. You've been working on this for a while now, and don't take this the wrong way, but I am surprised at how quickly you have been able to pick up the bookings.

Working with good quality people creates success in all fields -- whether it's cycling or music or anything else you want to do well at in the world.

View from hotel lobby into swimming pool
alcove.

We we have had great weather this entire trip except for Santorini. Cloudy & it looks like it will actually rain. Which chased us inside and look what I found. Heading off to Athens.

Actually half these gigs I got as a solo act, I just really don't want to play solo for three hours. Being in a duo is ideal, we can field a 20 song repertoire, then I can fill in the last 10-12 songs (or maybe a couple more, varies) solo, that lets me play a bunch of originals as well (all the stuff we do as a duo are covers). We're really a trio, we'll have Al on percussion most of the time, it really adds a lot to our sound. The money gets rather pathetic when you're whacking up $100-$150 3 ways, but none of us are doing this for the money. I figure I'll pull in a couple of hundred a month for something I love to do, it will pay for gas, coffee and guitar strings. Once in a while there may be a bigger payday I guess. Whatever.

I'm actually kind of in two duos, and I really enjoy the collaboration, these guys have become good friends as well.

It cost me more money to race my bicycle and it was far more treacherous and skullfarked.

Santorini is an amazing place. I distinctly recall getting off the plane at the airstrip there fresh from a changeover after the flight from JFK (NYC) to Athens, and so help me, it was like stepping onto the surface of another friggin planet. It was great.

I am usually too cheap to spend much on a hotel room. Seriously, I am the master of conniving budget travel. But I made an exception for this hotel & Im glad I did. We leave in a few hours, will be sad to go.

Interestingly, every other tourist on Crete seemed to be French or German with a sprinkling of Brits. Santorini is much more mixed, lots of Americans. We stayed up late drinking up all the good Crete wine last night with our American neighbors, nice couple from NYC, just married 3 days ago. We didn't want to try to fly with any wine later today. So that makes it another lie-around-the-hotel day by default.

Athens tomorrow.

This may be true, but there is a jolt one gets from this that is actually repeatable, or even better. Unlike other drugs, where you're always chasing that first high.

Playing live music with your friends can be similar. Burns far fewer calories of course.

It's been about two years since I have been in an active gigging band. This was a typical setup I would move around to do my thing on the drums playing heavy metal. It was never fun playing gigs with narrow steep stairs to a 2nd floor room.

At some point I will miss playing live again enough to form or join another project. I rent a small room at a local rehearsal studio so I can play my drums whenever I want.

Egomaniac with an inferiority complex.

It's complicated.

There's a song in there somewhere.

P.S. The guy that does the logo artwork picks the order of the names.
