Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Poppycock. My SS is 170, the rain bike and Cinelli are 175's, and I had several 172.5 over previous generations. I try to copy the same fit on all my bikes. Crank length has never seemed a concern.

170 on the fixie, 172.5 on the Scapin, 175 on the MTBs. I don't even know what's on the Lemond. Egads! They might be wrong

If I had my druthers I'd go 172.5 on MTB and 170 on road but 172.5 MTB cranks aren't very common.

What is the reason that you'd want longer cranks on the MTB?

@RollCNY same question for you- why the different crank lengths?

175s make me feel like I can climb anything.

Harder to keep the pedal speed up on the flat and easy stuff, though.

Saying that you manage to deal with a variety of crank lengths os not the same thing as calling poppycock on the notion of them all being the same. When I am building a new bike, should I mot match the crank length with my preference? What is the upside of that?

...what's the purpose of the bike ? What's the BB height ? Are you always cornering aggressively so that pedal strike is a concern ?
Can you really tell the difference between a 170 crankset and a 172.5 one in a double blinded test ? Have you run this study ?

Where can I see the results ? What was your control group size ? Experimental group data ? Are you not at Lake Tahoe ?

Why are you not out watching the sunset ?

Nah. I just don't want to get on one bike and have it be different than the others hanging next to it. It doesn't cost any more to have all your cranks match. What possible reason can you give for not? Saying it does not seem to matter to you is not the same as it being the right thing to do.

I agree with the fit for Heathpack. Get it dialed in and set up both bikes accordingly.

Of course it costs more. The magic bike came with 170mm cranks, I had no choice over that and had to pay significant $ to change out to the 165s.

The sparrow was bought used with 170s and I will again have to pay $ to swap out.

Yes used is a different situation. But for new, crank length, bar width and stem length should be made right at no additional cost at the time of purchase. My opinion anyway. In my situation it is moot since I build my own bikes from frames and parts. It is no more expensive to get the right size than the wrong. And in your case the majority of the extra expense should be offset by sale of the original parts. So specifically you should be able to get a similarly used 165 mm crank for the Trek on ebay for little more than you can turn around and sell the used one that came with the bike.
