Cycling Heroine got a power meter. Now she is out of control, riding LT intervals up these hills we climb, blowing past everyone else. She's really so far out of my league at this point that I prefer riding hill repeats with her so she can just do her thing without me slowing her down.
But we've had this plan for awhile to do a long ride, so we're planning on this one on Saturday:
Ojai-Santa Barbara-Painted Cave 200k - Ventura, CA
Its 134 miles & ridewithgps says 10,000 ft, but the elevation gain is typically overestimated by RwGPS, so it might be more like 8000ft. We're going to do the reverse route to get the climbing done early (it will be hot) and then come south along the Pacific Coast Highway at the end, which is typically a tailwind. So the reverse route is easier.
The route was put together by her rando friend, aka Mr 1200k. Supposedly he is mellow but from what she tells me about the rides he does, I can't imagine that he is. They are both way faster than me up hills, probably at least 2 mph faster.
Anyway, I'm posting about it because I'm actually kind of intimidated, not so much by the ride but by riding it with them. If I post about it, I'm less likely to find some reason to back out. So here it is, now I'm publically committed to this ride. Yikes.

I firmly believe in supporting the small business. I believe in doing all I can to make it to Ace or Tennyson Hardware, before hitting the Borg. Same with restaurants, bakeries, and coffee. Everything, as much as I can. But, when one gets attitude, ineptitude, and it starts costing silly, one walks away and goes back to a known quantity.
That said, I do not like the dynamic that has developed between big government and big business... IMO big burdensome regulations have made it unpossible for small businesses to enter and compete in some industries. Autos, metals, paper and forest products, farming and energy come to mind, the safety, environmental, and gawd knows how many other standards have made the barrier to entry extremely high. Not that the regulations don't help, but the unintended consequence is that only big/global players can afford what it takes to comply.

I support good business. Hating businesses just because they have been successful and grown large seems wrong.

Oh, I'm not worried about that. She's all about making everyone (herself included) better, that's important to her, very nice person. But her riding style is not exactly "nice," she is pretty tough and won't hesitate to push the pace. It will probably be good for me, but that will be a PB distance & climbing for me, not for them. Left to my own devices, I would not also push the pace.
Im trying to figure out the main climb, I'm sure someone has made a Strava segment of it- I just need to find it. I'm thinking its around 8 miles at 7%, pretty tough but doable. The rest of it is no big deal, except for the distance.
Edited to add: no, I think it's a 15 mile climb with the last 10 miles being relentlessly up.

This little guy has been hanging around my house the last week or so, whining for mom to come feed him. I know he has fledged, because he moves from one backyard to another. Like eagles, it probably takes a couple months before they learn how to hunt for themselves.

My point was, she will push you just hard enough. If she wanted a hard training ride for herself, she wouldn't have invited you. She wants a hard ride with good company. So if you look like you are cracking, she will slow down and stick with you. I sometimes ride with a guy who is much stronger than me (Cat II road racer), and he never complains, and for reasons I don't know, seems to enjoy riding with me.
And I also sometimes ride with two guys who are MUCH weaker than I am. And I enjoy their company. Those rides usually find me in the wind with them on my wheel (I cut a big draft)
Just enjoy the ride, it looks like a good one. And say hi to UMD if you run into him

I won't go back. It's not that I'm offended or nuttin', but I don't need the aggregation. I'd just as soon go to someone who's not overwhelmed.
In fairness though, new businesses always struggle with unexpected demand. It takes a while to adjust to the demand; some make it, some don't. I don't take it personally, I just look at it as there's other fish in the sea.

Earlier we were talking about getting yelled at. Usually I don't understand (or care) what the motorists are saying, but not yesterday evening.
I was hammering up this hill and I hear a vehicle coming up behind me. I expected it to pass me, but it did the annoying thing of trailing behind me.
After about 20 seconds I hear this female voice shout out: "Dude, you're awesome!"
[There might have been a hint of sarcasm to this remark, it was a bit nebulous.]
I was in the midst of a serious cycling climb and could not be bothered with such t*****s, and I hammered on without looking back. When I got to the end, the vehicle had turned off the road. I did not get to see my admirer.
