Thanks for the car talk.
The kia and hyundai options are very competitive, but somehow I am wondering if these cars will hold up for 15 years. I am not the type to get a new car very often.
Still no word from the mechanic. Hoping any new car choices can be postponed a few more years.

Good luck to the pup, HP. If it is a nipple thing, seek professional expertise. Don't guess out of your bailiwick.

I hope it's a temporary thing as well, Heathpack.
Made it to the gate, so it's a good start. Thanks!

When I started this thread years ago, I thought it would be like my other threads: run for 10 days, descend into a petty flame-throwing war and get locked.
Yet here we are.

I just went through this, with the same list of vehicles. If you have never driven an old Mazda3, the new Mazda3 is decent. If you know the old, it is a pale comparison. The Honda Fit is insanely underpowered, and geared in the manual so that it SCREAMS at 6omph and up. Surprisingly nice otherwise, but it also has no modern amenities. Of the stick shifts, the best two hatches I found were the Hyundai Elantra GT and the Ford Focus. The Hyundai was more performance oriented, but the Focus was nice (it was the 5 speed stick).

of course i have to recommend a fiat 500.
i recently regretted having a 2-door as a friend is a lyft driver and said it's a lot of fun. you need a 4-door vehicle though, for both lyft and über.

RUOkie, this my annual trip to WA state. Missed it last year because of the collarbone but was going to get lynched if I missed it this year. No bike, but good friends. Still a win.

I will say that it had the finest clutch of ALL the vehicles I drove, if you like a light action, short throw clutch. American cars tend toward a heavier spring, longer throw, almost on and off feeling, where a fine Jap clutch is like touching silk. IMO.

Just general observations and comments from a series of reliable mechanics I know:
Hyundai owns Kia, but Kia still lags Hyundai in long term serviceability. This shows up in things like service parts availability, getting the right part in a box when you order it, dramatic part changes midway through a year. I think the Kia Forte's look much sharper than Elantra's, but I would not get one unless it was intended as a 4-5 year car.
Hyundai and Kia have very long warranties, but they are the biggest stickler in actually getting them to honor it. You have to go in planning on doing all maintenance through them, at their service prices. I have been told this by several reliable sources, and I knew someone several years back who had to replace a Kia Sportage engine out of pocket because he did not do a 500 mile and 3000 mile oil change through them. The engine had 3200 miles on it when it woofed. He claimed he did them himself, and that may or may not be true, but regardless, an issue at that mileage seems extreme.

So my poor little Saturn is at the garage. I am hoping for an affordable fix. If not, I will be needing a new car....in which case there will be major drama between me and mrs. datlas regarding automatic vs. stickshift. I still strongly prefer stickshift, but she is skeered of them and will want to be able to drive the new car. I am afraid I may have to cave. What was that topic yesterday? Neutering??
I won't be fooled. We will either get a clutch-based stick (my preference) or a full automatic (maybe even a CVT), her preference.
Current top choice for replacement is Mazda3, Honda Fit, or Honda Civic. I generally like to buy new and keep car for 10+ years.
That said, the saturnforums guys say that a well maintained Saturn SL should last 250K+ miles, so I am still hoping we can fix what I have (mine has only 127K even though it's 16 years old).
