Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

That is the problem here. Most of the side/neighborhood streets and the county roads are covered with ice due to melting and freezing.

Another winter like last year and this and we may start to see a mass migration of people relocating from the north to the south and the west.

That would be interesting.

Truthfully, were you to bring a rim and assorted wheel stuff in for me to do it, I would simply quote you an inflated price for the labor, to cover any shortfall in the retail markup. Your best bet if you want to stick to controlling your prices and markup on bike stuff is to do the work yourself....crazy thought, I know.
The web discount isn't usually that big a deal with rims either.

Our seasonal roads open April 15th. That is also the end date of the next Computrainer series which I've signed up for.

Coincidence?

Yup. Major problem here this winter. I am acutely aware of the hazard since my wipeout a month ago on frozen runoff. My hip is still sore.

Some places that is quite common as in Russia, I hear. People just don't trust the quality and sterility of the medical goods in hospitals and doctor's offices.

A bona fide LBS may need to inflate labor charges to make up for lost revenue on the parts, but as a semi-pro, hobbyist wheel builder I don't feel that way. I only charge $100 to build a pair of wheels and much prefer to have the customer bring all the parts to me with specific instructions how they want the wheels built. No muss, no fuss. I guess for me it is not really about the money.

Yeah, the forest fires suck because they can hinder activities in the mountains. I had to cancel a backpacking trip last year because of smoke. Other than that, I've lived here my whole life and I've felt one earthquake and it was just strong enough to wake me up. We aren't the only place in the country with a potential for earthquakes either, the New Madrid fault line in the mid-west has the potential to shake stuff up big time.

Forecast highs for this weekend are in the mid-70's. Sign me up.

I think the people intending to move made up their mind some time ago, and are now simply stacking up excuses. In NY, and the Northeast in general, it gets cold, then it gets wet, then it gets buggy, then it gets cold. This cycle repeats. I have trouble seeing the difference between between average temps of 9 deg for Feb vs 15 deg. Neither is Speedo weather.

It's not because I'm old. It's because I'm still sick and should have stayed home.

So do they turn the heat down a bit to cool it off in there or are you hammering away in a 72 degree sauna?

Maybe I am in the excuses camp. But this winter has been the worst for road cycling since I can remember. The temps are not the problem. I can ride down to roughly 5F. It's the road conditions that have sucked the big one.

Parody thread idea:

"At what point do you start to see diminishing returns with a (the) road bicycle forum?"
