Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Who did you work for? Maybe I worked on one of your bridges.

As for stats, I think we had near 200 county and township bridges. I had a NBIS and fracture critical certification and did inspections for a few years when office work was slow.
The only project I worked on in your area was a Route 8 improvement for IDOT. There weren't any bridges on that project, but there were several box culverts and some retaining walls. Most of the projects I worked on were in the Chicago area.

I worked for a number of consultants including STV, Teng, Christopher Burke, American Consulting Engineers and some other less notable consultants. About a year ago I finally got worn out from the downtown commute and started looking for something closer to home. I was laid off in June and in September I started where I am now. My commute has gone for 1.5 hours one way to 20 minutes one way.

I had a couple Christopher Burke projects. As for Route 8, if you're talking about Washington to East Peoria, that was way overdue and I'm glad it was done.

It IS. I love the hell out of that bridge. I've spent so much time either working near or crossing that bridge . . . it's like a part of me.

My grandmother flushed her bridge one time. It was a crappy job getting it out of the septic tank.

Putting a very fine point on this discussion indeed! You have truly captured it's essence.

...yeah. I'm back riding after a five week bronchitis vacation. The first couple were rough, but yesterday I got to go for a quick run on this:

And the day before I got to do a ride down the river and back through town on this one:

The redbud is in full bloom along the river bike trail.

Since the espresso machine needs a little time off (water reservoir has a slow leak), we went out for coffee and breakfast this morning. I had professional biscuits and gravy. It was good. Didn't ask the server about the flour used, though. A missed opportunity.
