Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Agreed. I had to get up at 5AM CDT and I got a text saying coverage had started. I made coffee, did a couple small things and turned it on to find that all I had missed was the flag drop. The racer timer was still reading under a minute. That's coverage to the max.

First I noticed that I wasn't getting any power/cadence data, so I stopped and dicked with that, to no avail. There was a firmware update a couple days ago, so something went wonky there.

I was still feeling good and moving well, but then I realized that I'd forgotten my food at home. The only gas station around had lemons and limes on hand, but no bananas. No bananas? wtf.

Shortly after that, a bit of bounciness in the saddle told me that my rear tire was low. Couldn't find any sealant spray or signs of a puncture, so I just topped off and kept moving. ...until it got low again, about 5 miles down the road. I must have had more punctures than I'd thought, because the inside of the tire was dry (which I learned after cultivating and popping a few blisters during the removal of the tire).. Popped in my spare tube, but the threads on the valve stem were bungled and I couldn't get my pump threaded on all the way, so I got it up to ~30psi and limped a few miles to a bike shop.

The ride after that was mercifully uneventful, but all that stuff sapped my energy a bit, so it was a bit slow going.

Time for beer and beer and food.
So, in other words, a ride to remember. Those are the best.

Anybody can do a ride on smooth, flat pavement on a 72º sunny day with light breezes. Yours was a real cyclists day. Kudos.

I'm 67. I don't need the angst anymore. I subscribe to the "head in the sand" theory. I'm happier for it.

Heathpack, I was offline last night and missed this very sad news. There was no doubt “out here” about your love for Doglet and how special she was. I hope that your memories of her will assuage your grief as time passes. Certainly no dog could have been better loved and cared for. Be strong in the knowledge that she lived a wonderful life. I am so very sorry for your loss.

A standard error. Right up there with the reversal of advise and advice. No one except English teachers, I suppose, even knew these errors were common before blogs and forums.

I'm with you on this on. And look at that!. You're older than me!. I turned 66 on Tuesday. Except for a few chronic pains (and significantly less energy), I don't feel a day over 56.

But by spreading my athletic mediocrity across three sports, I can beat soccer moms and cubicle dads for low-level local fame.

More seriously, it's a lot of fun, and the vibe is very different from a swim meet or running race.

I was being flippant. I admire people who can do all three. I can swim easy enough but cannot run very far due to spinal injury as a ute. Too painful.

I had my 47th anniversary on Monday. Feels more like 50 years but who’s counting.
