Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Aware.

I just got a call from him. He seems fine. Does not recall about 10-15 minutes after the crash. I advised brain rest and prognosis is good.

Well, if you're racing, it's because you want to win. If you're riding for fun, it's because speed is exhilarating.

No Sudoku, crosswords, or 1000-piece all-white jigsaw puzzles for a week.

Exactly. That much anterograde amnesia is not a big deal. I think brain rest is good, but the supporting evidence is thin and no one really knows what it means.

I kinda remember those days, so maybe the word ‘never’ should be struck from the record.

I get kinda spooked going much over 30 - 35 MPH, especially if I'm not pedaling. Pedaling I can feel safer at slightly higher speeds, since I'm creating some stabilization with the wattage. I don't enjoy just sitting on the bike and flying down descents at 40 MPH or more, especially as a smaller rider. I've had some bad downhill accidents too (concussions etc) so I'm a little scarred from that.

Pedaling sure helps with the descending whimwhams.

My problem with descents isn't the speed, it's the cornering. I've gone 45 on a bike, on a road I knew well, and which is straight with long sightlines. But on anything more curvy, I have difficulty NOT imagining what would happen if I overcooked the turn - would I slide under the wheels of that oncoming car? Or fly off the road and down the side of the mountain? This is why long descents leave my hands aching.

You laugh, but the dominance of a very few companies in the horological tools sector is not to be sneezed at. Basically Bergeon and Horotec. And Dumont for tweezers. Good ****, those Dumont tweezers.

I'm a descending wuss, too, but there are several descents where I feel reasonably secure but am spun out and don't bother trying to pedal. Even when getting as aero as I can one of my friends will roll away from me but he is 40 pounds heavier and more aero than I am.

Is he shorter than you?

On the Monthly C&V rides, I tend to take point, and I always find myself 100 yards ahead at the bottom of the 1/4-1/2 mile dropoffs on the route. I don't know if everyone else is braking, or what.

Looks like the damages to our townhome are gonna be over the insurance max coverage of 10 grand. Question - any reason to not hit up the HOA master insurance policy to help cover the rest? Other than the obvious headache. Could be worth it since it'll be a few grand.

I can't think of any reason not to.... but I'm new at this stuff

In my previous racer-boy life, 40+ while sitting on the top tube was no big deal. One time, I hit 60 on a long 4-lane downhill during a race in Death Valley (the anxiety level was very high, but I pushed through). In my return to riding in the last 4+ years, it's been a slow progression to rebuild my confidence at speed, and the occasional 40 is getting more comfortable. That said, I'm a bit larger than you. I don't see a return to my previous envelope-pushing speeds, however. I have a greater respect for my personal structural integrity than I used to.

I almost have a reverse climb sag on descents sometimes - start towards the front so I can let riders pass me and still be attached at the end . At least that's what I do on San Luis Rey RR. In other local RR's I've done, the descents were slower (Boulevard, Valley of the Sun, Victorville). In college the climbs and descents were gnarlier but I had more balls back then

Even if you could, between the extra weight and the smaller frontal area, he'd probably still roll away from you.

Yes, the fear of ending up as a pile of bones at the end of a long red smear would keep me from going over 40 very often.

This. I am especially cautious with unfamiliar twisty downhills with poor sight lines.

That describes today’s crash scene. At least two others went way over the center line but stayed up.
