Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Today (Saturday) I walked from the university, where I took my final exam first thing this morning, to Rehab to see Rowan.

Then Rowan and I went out for a walk ... a slow walk with several breaks including a coffee stop.

I wanted to Zwift this evening, but just didn't have the energy after being up late last night studying for my final exam.

What with half day Fridays and not getting up in time for a ride before work, I decided to ride TO work. 17.6 miles each way on essentially the same route, but managed to show 1200' + elevation on the return, but only 900 something on the way in. I wonder if either is close to correct.

Feel like I've caught some kind of bug - scratchy throat and all - but I forced myself to go out for a hilly ride. Didn't push it too hard except a couple of times, and didn't venture more than 8 miles from home, but managed to collect 49 miles and 4500' (or was it 4200? Or 4800?) just riding up and down the East Hill here.

Oh, on a side note... On the way in Friday, I realized I really needed a bell, so I stopped by my old shop and had a nice chat with the proprietor, whom I hadn't seen in quite some time, even though his shop is only a couple of blocks from the office. Later, I realized I'd lost the cap from the repair kit that sits in the seat tube cage, so I stopped by the home shop, hung out while they attended to some other customers, and had a nice chat with them. Overall a very bike-y day.

The way I'm feeling, tomorrow will probably be a rest day.

I thought had to cover a co-worker on Saturday, do I ride into work and found out someone else was coming. Headed home and added another two miles, but close to home I ran into my wife taking my kids to some forgotten meeting, so I ended up having an extra hour to bike and clean up after.

At this point, it was getting HOT out, so I headed up a nice climb with the option to do a nice short finish to the climb out extend it to a steep longer climb (average 8% or something). At the turn I could tell that my legs haven't returned from my total lack of cycling throughout half of March and April, and coupled with the rising heat i decided to just finish the short climb. It was probably for the best because the road was quite wet from the previous day's rain, which was turning the air into this thick steam. Also I wouldn't wanted to descend on a steep curvy at road.

After another ride later to the doctor (finally decided to start going to rehab for my arm which hasn't recovered flexibility) I finished the day with around thirty five miles.

Saturday - Legs tired after the last week of 195 miles. So I decided to see if they could knock out another 50 miles today. So I took out the very comfortable, 29 year old, Greg Lemond Ventoux. First 18 miles saw about 1000 ft of climbing as well as a slipping rear wheel. Someone (me) hadn't tightened the QR right last time they had the rear wheel off. Took me a few minutes to realize the tire was rubbing, thought I was just really tired. Then I had another 17 miles of good riding until 20-30 mph winds came in. Knocked me around pretty good for awhile but when at my back it was great. Finished up right over 50 miles.

So little snow on the Mts, going to be a dry summer

Hay making time

Love the smell of the cut hay, takes me back to the years on the farm making hay all summer long.

The Greg Lemond Ventoux in action, or is that resting from the action?

There's a whole world of wilderness beyond these hills.

Hills are to brown for this early in the year.

Greener to the north.

A bit hazy today, normally clearer.

Typical ranch entrance

Bikes: Lectric Xpedition.

I rode for about 80 minutes yesterday. Didn’t really keep track of time or distance. No Strava uploads. I waved cheerfully at people “on yer left” and smiled at people who thought my bent was cool. I’d love to do it again today but wife might have other plans.

Very nice pictures, as usual, but this one really bothers me.

What's going on here?
Looks like sloppy editing, with the presumably distant mountain cutting into the nearer hill.....

LOL, I was wondering who would notice that. That's called photomerging two low quality cell phone images on a low powered laptop still running PS2. Bad blend just at that one end of the MT. I was just playing yesterday and didn't worry about it too much.

I use that technique seriously for a lot of Panographs and large images. I'll take a telephoto and shoot highly detailed pieces of an image then merge them in photoshop. This has pretty much eliminated my medium format gear for scenics.

This 3' x 5' picture was shot using a Mamiya 200/2.8 APO lense adapted to my Canon 5D body. It's around 30 images combined, then cropped and downsized. In the full resolution image you can clearly see several elk at the bottom of the valley along the creek. This was printed up as a test of the technique more than for the image itself.

The shot from yesterday was just me being lazy.

Sat: Shop gravel ride. 35mi 3k climbing. mixed group of abilities so there was a bit if go and wait for the first half. One guy who had a slick tire hybrid bailed after the first dirt section, which was a good choice and made things go a bit quicker. Legs were still a bit sluggish from the big ride last week so taking it a bit easy was ok. I did hit a few of the hills hard for fun since i'd have some time to recover afterward. Near the end the guy I had been riding with off the front had to get back to we stopped waiting and just kept a good pace. Nice day to be out in the mid 70s with no wind. Had brought my CX bike back to the shop to get it adjusted after my cables/housing had stretched, 5 mins of mechanic magic and it worked great. now I just have to not touch it

Sun: quick 6-7mi mtn bike ride with some friends. went to a fairly new place to us and we got a bit turned around and wandered but on some nice trails. Wasn't as long as we usually go but I was ok taking it easy today. my mtn bike brain didn't get in gear until the last half anyway

Ah, so you're slipping!
I was wondering how you got pictures like that just riding around. I appreciate the work you do to make them look good.
Funny thing about that test example: looking at the mountain/sky section in isolation, it looks normal, and looking at the lower portion in isolation, that looks normal, too. But when you can see them together, the sharpness of the mountaintops and the clarity of colors in that portion look out of place. A really shallow depth of field might be too artsy sometimes, but there's something un-scenic about everything being in focus and the lack of atmospheric perspective - it's certainly unlike a natural point of view. Very interesting, though.

Actually that really how it is there. Super clear all the time...when there isn't a fire. The problem with this scene is that without including the foreground detail you don't get a true sense of the depth. That is actually a really huge area. The lab I used for the test just didn't have the ability I needed to print the scene properly.

That one ride picture is actually the first time I've used photo-merge with any of them. Most are just out of the cellphone with maybe cropping and a levels adjustment. Basic stuff. Yesterday was a weird day for up here with a lot of UV haze/humidity we don't usually get.

Crazy gusting winds today so not safe to go out. Most of my routes had no real shoulder so I don't do the high winds anymore. Too easy to get pushed out into traffic.

Didn't get out early, but did get out, & not too bad of wind penalty.

63, 5,300'

Stopped to visit my Mom along the way.

Of yeah, been getting some downhill PRs lately while running 27mm Paves at 60/75 psi.

Saturday morning "small" group ride around my usual training route, 2 laps totaling 37.4km. I was expecting a relatively easy ride, so I rode my Dahon mini-velo for an "extra shot"..... but there was an unexpectedly large turnout with several strong riders joining. Suffice to say, it was a particularly hard-paced workout for me!

Sunday joined a fast group some hill-climbing, going over a hill and then back home the same way in reverse. 113.9km with 1172m elevation. The gradient was mostly light and steady except for a short double-digit segment, but the main group head powering up at 25-30km/h I could only keep up with them for a bit before I ended up falling back to the rest of the "not-so-crazy-fast" members. Road conditions downhill weren't that great though, so the descents weren't as fun as they could have been.

Tuesday I did my usual Davis Is evening ride for 33 miles. The heat didn't bother me too much. I'm hoping this means I'm going to have a better summer this year than last. Saturday I rode to Upper Tampa Bay trail for 40 miles. Low wind with no real direction, so I could ride pretty hard. Sunday I had "dead legs", which I thought was going to lead to a really dreadful ride. I rode to Flatwoood Park and then did a loop there. My legs "came back to life" after about 15 miles into the ride and it turned out to be fairly enjoyable 49 miles.

Took Friday off from work and road 56 miles up through North Central Connecticut and South Central Massachusetts. Hadn't done this route in a while ... I knew the first section was a long climb but had forgotten the difficulty (for me!) of the middle part of the ride. Survived and took Saturday off from riding ... went for a short hike with the dog in the early morning then a couple mile hike with my wife. Sunday, did an easy 23 mile ride.

Tuesday ... back to work.

4.9 km walking
4 flights of stairs
55 min on the trainer ... Zwift!

I was going to do some other stuff this evening but decided to spend nearly an hour "cycling" instead. I find I feel a little bit better about things when I do that, or when I'm able to go for a run.

Sunday: Joined the ladies' weekend ride (which was only 3 people this time) for a 40 miler, then added another little loop to get 65.8 miles, 3,077'. It was nice and cool for once, so I did not make any stops.

This brought the week total to 210.7 miles, my first 200+ mile week since last year.
