Humans seem to have a weird sensibility to noises around them. Neither bike nor music related -- people typically dislike it when someone is talking on their phone in a closed space -- eg. like in a restaurant. However, it seems somehow way less offensive somehow if instead 2 people sitting next to each other are having a conversation.

Credit where credit is due. I have rarely, if ever, encountered a Lance blaring music; the phenomenon is mainly reserved for hybrid, shirtless drop-bar or e-bike riders. However, their aversion to carrying a Bluetooth speaker also translates to standard safety bells.

A thread I enthusiastically agree with!!! There is a nearby MUP (named Louisville Loop) which has several very nice parks with a paved concrete path, and some off-road trails thru the woods. One of the parks' paved path runs along a beautiful "run" (wide creek) and is very scenic and usually peaceful and relaxing. Thank goodness that the rider who used to ride it with a boom box blaring full blast while riding along this usually peaceful path has evidently moved on and riding somewhere else. Couldn't have been a deer or other wildlife within 5 miles or more when he was around. Earbuds are made for a reason.

You can thank me later.

For the record, loud music on bikes annoys me also, but it isn't worth mentioning or even getting upset about. I pass them and they're gone in, what, two seconds? Much ado about nothing.

If the cacti aren't prickly now, they will be soon after he moves there.

Now we have a real Lance! The last guy was at four seconds.

I try. But without any Lycra, I'm just a pretender. When the morning light comes streaming in, I'll get up and do it again.

But it does amaze me that people think this is okay. Same with people on motor cycles absolutely blasting music in order to hear it over their loud engines. There are so many options to just hear it in your own ears only. I pretty much can only assume these people are intentionally trying to annoy other people. Or at least trying to attract attention.
Much like people holding their phones in front of their mouths for calls with the call on speaker.

We attempted to reach out to Trek for comment but they were unwilling to worry about this nonsense. The RMCP said we don't have time to look into this nonsense either.
It's a beautiful thing that will make beautiful music for all the beautiful people.

It’s like an influx of Jet Skis on a small lake; one is tolerable, twenty are not.

Not much can be done. I point to my ear then give the offender the finger. The way things are going in Toronto this will eventually get me shot so I may rethink that strategy.

For a cyclist, you sure seem to hate a lot of your fellow cyclists.

Rudimentary percussion instruments - very old (no evidence exists as they probably looked like rocks and sticks because they were)
Singing - 500,000 years with appropriately evolved vocal chords
Actual manufactured instruments - 40,000 years

Headphones - 150 years
Headphones that work on bicycles - 50 years

We are still in the infancy of non-communal music.

I confess. I was part of a large crowd of riders surrounding an electric bike towing a trailer with a sound system. Not just any sound system. 350 pounds of high quality gear; big, great sounding speakers, excellent FM reception and an absurd amount of amp power. I forget the number but a few thousands of watts. Bike, trailer and gear weighed 600 pounds. My second time but it's been happening a few years. On a Friday night during and as part of Portland's Pedal Palooza. Jazz radio station's Palooza event. Take's place during the Soulful Strut radio show celebrating the Black music that might be heard on a Friday night. The program is of recorded music, but the DJ is live, full of energy, has an incredible depth of music knowledge and is full of energy. He called out a few hails to us. Fun!

But for the rest of my riding, no music. Except some of the time in my head.

Typically people in a restaurant don’t practically shout or have their speaker on full volume. Had a dinner in Florida practically ruined by a nob loudly talking to someone over the phone with zero regard for the people around him. It was selfish and rude.

Two people having a conversation in a restaurant at the volume people use when talking to their phones would piss a lot of people off.

Worse than speakers on bicycles: speakers on motorcycles. Motorcycles are inherently loud AND riders wear helmets that cover their ears AND there's a lot of wind noise, so then they turn the volume up to something they can hear above all of that. Last week I was passed by some clown on a Harley that sounded like he was running open pipes, and on top of it blasting music. WT actual F H?

Bikes: wabi classic (stolen & recovered)

in a perfect world one walking down a MUP trail would occasionally be passed by a slow moving Ebike emitting meditative music

but the world aint perfect and the Ebikers with their digital boom cubes blasting down a MUP trail are just another example of hyper individualism run amok

Is that Grand Master Flash and the bassist from Talking Heads whose name I can't recall?

Give the man a Kewpie Doll!

Tina Weymouth is her name. Married to Heads drummer Chris Frantz. Look at her massive right hand.

YES. Gradually my brain came around to "Tina Somethingsomething" but it didn't seem worth the edit.

Yes. Very loud.

Motorcyclists always blast Classic Rock, cyclists on hybrids and cruisers, Rap, while shirtless, helmetless cyclists on drop-bars vary in their noise pollution choices..
