Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Some things deserve a chuckle. When this particular twist of irony dawned on me I snorted coffee out my nose.

This is whole thread is beyond silly.

"Why are you guys such jerks?"

The vast majority of posts in this forum result in helpful, good advice and input whether it has to do with SS/FG bikes or not.

I hope some of you folks never fall off your bikes. With skin that thin you'll end up in the ER for sure.

I've found the commuter forum to be the most compassionate & least critical bunch. hopefully a cpl negative experiences won't turn you off the whole set of forums here.

I'm coming into the SS community after years with the roadies, and many of you have been outright rude.
I'm not trying to make this about me, I don't want your apologies (in fact I fully expect to hear more snarky comments). I just want to ask you guys why you have to be so guarded, why you have to interrogate someone for claiming to love the same sport you love, instead of welcoming them in? It's not a criminal offense to not know as much as you might want, and why in the hell do we have a forum like this if we're not supposed to ask for help? Try to embody the kindness that cycling has built itself around, welcome people in and try to help them get immersed in this amazing community we're lucky enough to be a part of. It honestly made me extremely sad to see how the majority of you guys greet a newcomer.

I'm waiting for all the hateful replies... maybe you'll prove me wrong. We'll see.
These aren't mutually exclusive. As someone learning, I fully expected to use an incorrect term, ask a stupid question, express frowned-upon preferences/priorities at some point, and someone's going to get mad or have some fun at my expense, but end of the day they're still willing to share info, give advice, answer questions, so I don't care how abrasive they go about it, they still help.

Anyway all that, it's part of what makes Internet forums fun to read (when it's not pointed at you).

If I had to guess I'd say the "Lycra Lassie" is of a younger age, those of us getting closer and closer to our AARP card can just handle sarcasm. Damn kids need to HTFU

+1, vast majority of posts in OP's original thread were even helpful. One person accused him of trolling and he threw a tantrum. Ridiculous.

It wasn't even an accusation, it was a implied suspicion.
