sheldon says that it is impossible to endo a tandem, as the front wheel will lock up before you can lift the rear wheel. unless you ride down a really steep hill and lean forwards.

with or without a person on the back. It'd be easier without, but more impressive with.

I'll be impressed if he finds a stoker to volunteer for this dangerous mission.

i need to just have a tandem sitting around so that i can bring it up at the drunkest possible moment of the night. the idea will sell very well if enough malt liquor is involved.

i dont run brakes, but i make sure i see exactly where i'm going to be in the next 5/10/whatever feet, and if i cant, i slow down. and so far i've only been in one serious accident, and it was because someone ran a stoplight and side swiped me, not because i couldnt stop in time

And this in most cases is what causes bicycle accidents - the other party, whether pedestrian, obstacle or driver. Your skillz are irrelevent when someone walks in front of you w/o looking; or a car makes a turn from the center lane of a three lane road and cuts you off while you have legal right to the right or left lane. Your skillz can only minimize the damage, with or w/o brakes.

Yeah, relevant discussion is always good, agreed. But many people here seem to think flythebike's "buddy" was simply riding beyond his abilities. Given the rider in question, I don't believe that was the case. It's unfortunate that he chose this incident to make his point about handbrakes, because I don't think that's what should be taken away from it.

No ****! Walls and fences don't usually move, but if you can't see around a corner you don't know that. Besides they've also got these things called people and cars that are extremely portable. If you can't see around the corner WTF are you doing going to fast to stop?

How funny, I own this exact DVD. Also featured: Northshore-style freeride unicycling.

But back to the e-brake thing. I think it's misguided to blame the cyclist in this circumstance. Or his bike. I've gotten in accidents on every bike I've ridden, whether it has brakes or not. We can drop hypotheticals right and left, but in this particular incident, neither riding style nor bike setup played as much a factor in the accident as the lack of warning signs leading up to the construction. I think the city ought to be blamed, and this thread retitled "Please use an E-sign."

More like "not bloody likely".

If you ran your tandem down a near-vertical incline (good luck getting your stoker to agree to this) and hit a big bump, you would endo. Anything's possible.

I'd think that downhill fork would suck up a lot going thorough its 6 inches of travel first. It also causes the bike to ride a bit high in the front. In all fairness, I'd agree with your quote. We're not bloodly likely to ever be in a situation where it would endo. And I've learned to respect the speeds you can achieve on one bike with two riders.

Sticky brought up a good point, but next he'll expect motorists to signal their actual intentions, and share the road with cyclists.
