Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Also, Harlan Ellison punched my dad's Land Rover once in Hollywood when I was little.

Also, I saw Norman Fell once at the LACMA gift shop.

Also, my friends and I were at a goth club called Hapihaus in the late eighties once, and John Waters was sitting in the next booth with a bunch of people. They were just kind of hanging, not saying much. My friend started working the names of Waters's movies into our conversation really loudly, just to make him uncomfortable. Like, "Did you ever see that movie PINK FLAMINGOS? It was OK, but that one girl really needed some HAIRSPRAY!" It worked. He got kind of fidgety, like "should I acknowledge what these people at the next booth are doing?" But he didn't.

hmm, our grandpas might have known each other... mine worked in chicago on the manhattan project for a couple years in the 40's. glenn seaborg, his bud who discovered plutonium, called him in to do some of the first physical experiments on said plutonium (it was just a speck) because he knew my grandpa was good at chemistry and fixing watches.

We have a cyclotron! I don't even exactly know exactly what it does other than kind of accelerate particles or something. I helped install and monitor the environmental and security controls for it...

Sorry its late and I've been drinking.

BTW that's Dr. Sharma, he's awesome. Not my department though.

Is everybody here somehow related to people I read about in my freshman year physics textbooks?

I was on the MIT campus do sketches of the Eero Saarinen chapel once, and the Dalai Lama was giving a speech at the Kresge Auditorium (also by Saarinen) and he waved to me as I watched him walk through the back entrance with his escort of monks.

I spent an afternoon with John Bardeen's son and Jack Kilby giving a museum tour. Kilby was very nice.

My wife was in a recital when she was 9. It was a Disney themed production. Dressed as Jimminey Cricket and singing "Wish Upon a Star" was a 5 year old Billie Joe Armstrong. She also went to high school with both Billie Joe and Mike Dirnt (then Mike Pritchard). She didn't know them, however, because they were not in class too much. But some of her friends hung out with them.

Billie Joe used to work at Rod's Hickory pit in Vallejo. During the timeframe he worked there, I used to eat there on my way from SF to sacto. So it's concievable that I have eaten pancakes cooked by the lead singer of Green Day.

Not sure how I feel about that.

Back to the origianal picture. I doubt it's a Bianchi ad since no bike company would ever have one of their riders smoking.

My bet is modeling portfolio.

Bikes: Too many 80s roadbikes!

I've met Scott Hamilton in rental-car places in two different airports.

You're friends with Mollie?! I'm jealous. She was the only cute girl on last season of Top Model.

a girl i saw briefly smoked meth with slash. at least it was the only time she'd done it, and it was with slash. she was from l.a. and hung out with other celebrities, too. everyone i know from l.a. has celebrity stories, and all the idaho kids who moved to l.a. tell them so many times i stop listening after a while.

a friend of mine hangs out with ben barnett from kind of like spitting.

when i was in high school i had a friend who would stay with the drummer from mxpx when she'd visit seattle.

my dad knows a guy who knew reagan and pope john paul II.

my girlfriend samantha's dad went to school with matt groening, and the blanket i'm currently under is simpsons yellow and was a gift from him to samantha's mom and dad.

living in portland, you see art alexakis from everclear around town from time to time.

the sister of an ex hung out with sufjan stevens.

a friend who was underage at the time hung out with king buzzo from the melvins, who snuck him into the 21+ show.

that's all i can think of right now.
