I;ll allow the laugh. I would have to take my balls off to ride drops.

We had a name for bikes with 700c wheels and risers when I was growing up. "Hybrids".

in these pics i can hardly see the risers.. mostly from the side, how about some closer shots of the shapes and maybe the make. I am trying to pick a riser for my ride.
You all have some sweet rides. |

Go to your LBS and ask them what they have in their pull off bin. Should cost about $10
|
well after reading this thread for a few days I went to the shop and got some used risers for 5 bucks. probably the best 5 bucks I've spent in a long time, **** is too fun. now I just need to cut em down a bit...thanks everyone.
|
that's it, i'm going hunting for risers tomorrow. apparently it's too much to ask for regular old silver aluminum riser bars, because everywhere i go they're either black and aluminum or silver and steel...
|
i just got some generic pyramid riser bars at LBS, silver and aluminum just like i wanted. chopped them down to city appropriate width, changed out the B123's and champ grips (pain in the ass) and took them for a test ride.
what a rush. i feel like i'm a little kid again, just cruising super fast, turning and cornering with the best of them, and a little more upright. i don't like the upright position as much as the more aggressive racing position i'm used to, but in the summer without any serious winds it shouldn't be a problem. it's crazy how this simple substitution makes me feel like i'm riding almost a different bike. the whole feel is more responsive, more agile, more apt to jump between cars in traffic (though less apt to go on a long, straigt road). it's also cool how simply changing the angle you have the risers in the stem changes the feel of the bike too. only con is the champ grips aren't so firmly glued onto the bars, they're kinda loose. all in all, well worth what little money they costed <3 |

I still don't quite understand why so many people love Oury's. Slippery, "Chunky Asses", PoS things. (sorry, that's just my opinion, I know ;)
Some fantastic looking riser bar set ups in here though, for sure. |

Some fantastic looking riser bar set ups in here though, for sure. Been around since the 80s. |
They slip around on the bars I mean. I don't mean the grip of your hand on the grip. ODI make lock on versions of 'em now which solves that though I guess.
|
not when whatever you use to get them on dries.
|
Yea they shouldn't slip. Just spray some hairspray. I actually just used compressed air and forgot about them. No slippage.

Good luck with those white Ourys. Those should be totally
blackened in about a day. |
could someone explain the whole using compressed air to get on your risers thing... i've never quite understood how that works, so i've just stuck to hairspray...
|
I put mine on dry. It takes strength and words like **** and **** **** but theyre on there and dont move. :)
Believe it or not, WD40 works well too and will dry tightly overnight. |
so does grip glue, i always use the glue they suggest using with keirin grips and bingo bango no oury slip.
|
The best trick is just a slight dab of rubbing alcohol. Put
it on a butter knife, and slather it around the inside of the grip. Dries completely in a few hours and leaves no residue. I'm surprised you BMX guys don't remember this! |
i use compressed air.. I use the cone shaped end and stick it inside of the grip and it blows up enough to slide it on.
|
at my lbs they have a compressed air hose, set to about 80 psi for quick air on bike builds...it has different nozzles for different uses, one is sort of a nipple. Put the nipple at the grip/bar interface, pry it under the grip a little, blow air into the grip whilst pushing the grip on. Grip goes right on and stays put.
