One time, while my friend was being pulled over, his exhaust was torn from the downpipe back off his ****ty Tercel by a highway rumble strip and thrown into the front windshield of the police car pulling him over.

That cop was ANGRY. No ticket though; he just made him run out into the middle of 78 and retrieve his exhaust.

Those rumble strips are scary ****. They make sense on the shoulders of highways (because at a high speed they just vibrate your car to wake you up) but when put all the way across the road in a 25mph zone they just make it dangerous for cyclists.

I love how everyone seems to think it's the cyclists fault for the cop driving over a log. I mean, he could have actually looked where he was going and chose not to ride over a log. It was him wasting tax payers money by trashing his own motor...

Being in law enforcement myself, I don't usually have much tolerance for people who simply flaunt the law for their own gain...but....I also have some common sense and the understanding that nobody has 100% integrity, not even me. Now there are people who will outright endanger others for personal gain, then there are people who slowly roll through an intersection, or cross on a red, etc, etc... I have absolutely no sympathy for an officer who can sit in his car and watch a traffic jam but has no issues with going after a cyclist who, from what I can see, was trying to be as safe as possible in getting out of some hairy traffic. Now, would I personally have tried to face off the cop, no, but in the mindset of a college student, who is still playing with living with outside authorities, kinda makes sense.

I have no problem with police in general. They have a difficult job to do, for sure. However, I think the church hired this officer to direct traffic going into and leaving the church service. Instead, he was sitting in his parked patrol car when the intersection was gridlocked. I doubt they hired him to arrest bicyclists. I did go through the intersection carefully and did not cut anyone off or make them brake for me. This is the only time a policeman ever pulled me over when I was on my bicycle. Most policemen are tolerant of bicyclists and let us get away with minor infractions.

He roared up behind me, flooring it, with the lights and siren going like I had just robbed the bank. He was probably going too fast when he pulled over onto the shoulder.

How much work was it to cut the log, and haul it to the tall grass the day before?

Why not pull over where no log is lying hidden in the grass? When the police officer steps out of his car, simply mention you pedaled to a safe spot to ensure the police cruiser wouldn't be damaged and point to the fallen timber. Tell him you would be happy to help him move it in case they need that section of shoulder in which to turn around. Is it that difficult to be pleasant, courteous, and engaging?
