a ss conversion on my bike would take 10 minutes, a tensioner and a shorter chain due to the shifter setup and it's totally reversable. i am thinking about running it ss for cross racing after running 1x9 all summer with long rides on the road.
cynikal, i have no idea what your question is getting at. |

I'm in the process of converting an old lugged tange Centurion Super Le Mans to a fixed gear. Its silver with the purple logo and has a chrome lug on the fork (i'll take a pic when its done). The bike was free and I tried to tune it up and get a working road bike out of it, but it was done for. I have two better and lighter road bikes so i decided to start converting it just for the hell of it. To my surprise I've put zero dollars into the thing so far. I had a some Deda drops laying around, the cranks were some old Suginos, the pedals were old MKS (just cleaned the rust of the clips), the front brake works and i had an extra cross bar lever. I salvaged the chain (but I might get a new) and i already have a cog and lockring. all i need to buy are the wheels. I'm not looking to put any money into this bike as its just for tooling around, but does anyone have any good leads or info on some cheap fixed wheels (online or local in L.A.). I would just buy a rear wheel, but the front wheel is rusted to hell (the spokes are on the verge of snapping). Anyway... any help would be appreciated.

Works great, but hopefully I'll knock out another this weekend with improved straps. |

blickblocks the pack looks great, and seconded on wanting to know how you like the bonty cranks. Stem looks fine, bike looks like it fits right like that. I don't see the problem

It would look better and probably handle better with the stem flipped. Perhaps she needs to complain to the LBS that cut the steering tube too short.
I am a cross-forum kinda guy. Let me qualify that: - different size frames come with forks that have different steerer tube lengths - ... because, it's not safe to have an aluminum steerer tube sticking 8" out of a headtube, etc. - the idea of flipping the stem to make the bike "handle better" is ... have even ridden a bike for more than 20 minutes at a time? - if the bike is set up comfortably then that means it looks exactly as it should - if you want to know something about making the bike handle better, having a shorter steerer tube and a flipped up stem is stiffer than having more steerer tube exposed and a bunch of spacers with the stem flipped down |

If she wants a bike that she can sit up on, then she should not have gotten a bike that requires one to lean into an aero position. So I disagree with your fourth point above. I wasn't recommending that she not cut the fork. I was only recommending that she either 1) get the LBS to replace the fork and cut it so that she can ride the bike like it is meant to be ridden (i.e., in an aero position) or 2) get a frame that fits her and her riding style better. I also agree with your points 2 and 4 above, and I see no reason to argue against them. They pose no threat to my opinions on the set up of this bike. |
