If it were my bars, I'd just make em shorter. Maybe you want something else. Brahmas? (I thinks that's it...) The bars that are bent into "bar ends" would be cool... they feel nice and would be "period". Or perhaps some of the new ones from On One.

Nice ride. I'm psyched for you for it to be a fixed gear.

Thanks Repeater! I'm building a flip flop wheel for it as we speak. I'm thinking that the 48 chain ring may be a bit much for a fixed gear though so we'll see. You hit it on the head. The brahmas are what I want to do for the handle bars and just wrap them.

Anyone think the 48 might be too tall of a gear to go fixed?

Not unless you want it for offroading. You can get EAI (recommended) or Soma (not) cogs up to 22t. So, no.

12XU 06-22-05 08:31 AM

The 61 cm Bianchi commuter I just finished building. It's very heavy in the back, which would probably make for some interesting wheelies if I got the guts to try one. It's a 48x16 ratio like my other bike, but regardless of the weight I can still fly on this thing. The handelbars, stem, pedals, and wheel set are taken from another bike, while the rest of the parts were salvaged at Free Ride. Total cost of the bike: $20 (right crank arm, track chain ring bolts, and 48 tooth Sugino chain ring).

Nice cargo setup!

That's like when I put a case of beer on the back of my mountain bike. It starts to buck around until I climb aboard. I like to think it's sassy about the beer.

I have to be real careful at lights when I put my foot down because if I lean too far to one side, the rear end likes to topple over. The only complaint I have with my setup is that I can't find a hardy crate that's long and thin for the back. The square crate partially covers the metal racks on the side, so I have to squeeze stuff in rather than putting it in unobstructed.

Holy crap, those are awesome!

When I score my old Schwinn Cruiser I'm going to throw on of those on. Maybe the fancy wood one..

Here's my first fixie. The frame is a 59cm Concorde roadframe, Columbus SLX tubing. Wheels are Suzue promax SB rear and tiagra front, both laced to cxp22 rims. Dura-ace cog/lockring, Campy mirage 170mm crankset. The rest is all stuff I had lying around. Gearing is 42x16. Rides like a dream, although it's abit noisy (hope that will solve itself).

I present to you the General Lee monster bike. Found this bike abandoned at a wawa...Painted it myself...it was the first time I ever painted a bike and I didn't quite give it enough time to cure so it scratched easily at first. I'll get around to touching it up someday (probably not). I added a spare seat I had, some drop bars, and new tires. I wanted to change out cranks, and stem and stuff but everything seemed to be different sizing than all the road parts in my bin. I also want to get a confederate flag sticker (not an actual flag on the back, I would get shot here in west philly) to complete the dukes of hazard look. This beast rolls over anything, weighs about 80 lbs, and skids like no joke...not the fastest bike in the world, but its fun none the less. Sorry for the crappy pic.

bostontrevor 06-23-05 08:27 AM

Rock on! For the rock-em-sock-em look you need to ditch the drops and get some flat bars on there. Get some stick on numbers and put an 01 on the top or seat tube.

Don't worry about scratching the paint. Unless you bake it, that's just what happens to home paint jobs. A half-dozen clear coats will help but even then you're in for some chipping.

Here's an updated pic of my Soma...slowly building it up.
Got a new Shimano 105 headset (yeah its ugly, but feels nice and I got it cheap), my new, obnoxious yellow tires and some kickass track grips. Next up in a new saddle and wheelset!

That cargo bike is an inspiration.

If you look around in weird places (liquidation sellers, school auctions) sometimes you can find locker trays, which are heavy-gauge mesh "drawers"--in other words, a hardy crate that's long and thin. i've found them square, and also oblong, and they are usually tapered from top to bottom.

and those racks Jitensha-de-Go suggested are maybe the coolest things I have ever seen.

this is a training bike for kids. at slow speeds it has "training wheels" that keep the bike standing up. at higher speeds, the rear wheels get vertical, the bike begins to act like a regular 2wheeled vehicle, and the rider starts to use her balance and to learn the basics of bicycle operation.

that's the theory anyway, though they probably (will) cost a million dollars (if they ever get made)

anyway i thought it was pretty cool.
