It's a "Sport" model, and it's one of the later Taiwanese manufactured bikes. I can't remember if the move to Taiwanese manufacture occurred before or after the Nishiki name was sold. Anyway, it's not one of the nice older Japanese makes, but it was cheap (my primary criterion, since it's getting locked up on the street all day), and rides well.

How much equipment did you need to build your own wheel? (Truing stand and that is it?)

It's not actually a white seatpost -- it's silver, off a busted old mountainbike. I cleaned it up with some sandpaper, so it's got a kind of satiny finish now, which diffuses the light and makes it look more like white in the photo.

I didn't use a truing stand - I laced the wheel with it sitting on edge on my lap, then trued it mounted on the bike with the brake pads as guides. That works pretty well for lateral truing, but I was wishing for a better guide for vertical truing. Hmmm, I could bolt a piece of scrap metal onto the brake bolt for that...

Thats a handsome cycle FlippingHades, what tubing is it? and man that would look even better with a white flite and some white skinwall tyres!

here's the new ride, just finished it.

custom frame off of ebay, built from columbus multishape tubing; asymmetrical chainstays, horizontally ovalized toptube, reverse teardrop downtube, flared seat tube.

(it came with a campy headset, bb, and seatpost, as well as a road fork and a track fork).

the frame is going to need new paint at some point (there's rust under the paint on the downtube) bit it'll do for now.

32h fixed/fixed phils laced to mavic cxp33's (built by steven at freewheel valencia)
campy strada conversions (back lip milled off)
campy seatpost (the seat tube is only 25mm at the top, so miche supertype for me :( )
nitto bullhorns
selle italia flite ti saddle

i'd like to put a new stem on it (right now it's a threadless adapter and a no-name stem, and i don't like the way they look), but other than that it's done.

BostonFixed 03-09-05 08:11 PM

Nice new ride, Dollface. What did the frame go for on the ebay, if you don't mind?

raygunner 03-09-05 08:12 PM

Nice score!

dolface 03-09-05 08:18 PM

$330 shipped, here's the listing http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...e=STRK:MEWN:IT

the only reason i bought it was i googled for multi shape tubing, and found this page http://www.classicrendezvous.com/Ita...umbus_main.htm, then guessed, based on the crappy pic, that the frame was made from that tubeset.

turned out to be a score, and thanks to raygunner for letting me have it.

FlippingHades 03-09-05 08:23 PM

Sweet! I love the color scheme -- contrasting stays are always nice.

It's just plain old 4130 chromoly, nothing special. It's a later Taiwanese Nishiki, not one of the nicer Reynolds-tubing Japanese models. I have vague plans to eventually paint it black with white stays (and put on a chrome fork I have lying around).

raygunner 03-09-05 08:39 PM

Dol, are the asymmetrical chainstays just a result of it being a custom job?

Do the have any affect on the spacing?

I'm curious...

dolface 03-09-05 08:41 PM

nope, spacing is normal. the stays aren't placed asymmetrically, they have different cross -sections.
here's a better explanation http://www.anvilbikes.com/story.php?news_ID=20&catID=3

whoa, that's cool. were both the forks built to match the frame?

How do you have the space for all those bikes in SF? I'm going to have to keep my new bike in my room, damn those tiny mission apartments!

most of 'em are in my bedroom, (the girl is less than thrilled about it) but it's getting crowded. there's also a room downstairs where i can keep some stuff, but i don't like to leave them there too long 'cause it's damp.
