walking disease 10-07-08 08:00 PM

Just got back from the hospital. I got hit by a car today. I was on a downhill in the bike lane, the guy had a stop sign at a cross street, blew through the stop sign, hit me on the left side with the front passenger side of his car, my fork exploded and I flipped up over the hood and to the side of his car and landed on the pavement. I dented his car, broke his passenger side rear view mirror off, and messed up his paint. My bike got ****ed...

I however managed to walk away with a bunch of scrapes and bruises. Nothing's broken!

triplesixer 10-07-08 08:03 PM

Glad to hear you are ok. But super ****ty about your bike. How are your wheels?

walking disease 10-07-08 08:05 PM

As far as I can tell, the wheels are fine. My back wheel isn't wobbling at all, and just eye balling it the rim doesn't look bent. The front rim doesn't look bent either, but it's a bit out of true.

triplesixer 10-07-08 08:06 PM

So basically your frame got dented and your fork exploded? That is crazy dude!

Are you being sarcastic? I can't tell.

triplesixer 10-07-08 08:10 PM

No no, I am being serious. It's just crazy that you walked away fine, your wheels are solid, but your fork exploded. I've never seen that... fork exploding with limited other damage, I mean.
Lucky you... kind of.

walking disease 10-07-08 08:14 PM

Ah, yeah. I was/still am surprised I walked away pretty much unharmed. My ribs and shoulder hurt like mad, but at least nothing's broken. Hopefully the dude's insurance will cover a new frameset. :\

triplesixer 10-07-08 08:23 PM

It probably will. At least you got his info. Most of the time motorists will just split without giving info.

Ride Among Us 10-07-08 08:34 PM

wow, that sucks!!!!! that frame is ruined and crumpled. too bad, i see its a 2006 or 2007 sputnik and they don't offer that easton fork anymore. i love those jamis sputniks . i would buy one and leave just the way it comes off the shelf if i didnt already have 3 bikes. did you get insurance info? you'll be compensated if so and there's also pain and loss of work... get another sputnik!

glad to see you're okay.

Surprising, yes, but the frame is well worthy of serious components.

sorry, my mistake. i was under the impression that it was a mid-ish range fixed frame aimed at slightly less than broke hipsters. i was judging it by the **** that comes on it and thoughts its geo was a bit slack. i still think its ugly though. those amazing parts would look way hotter on one of the older Cannondales.

Japanese Bianchi Pista, lime green.

54cm, Nitto riser bar, Oury's.

Soon to have a set of white Gran Compe wheels (white rims, white hubs and white spokes) with white tires.
And I will get some Nitto track drops with white grips.http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3136/...72678c2d_o.jpg

walking disease: that's terrible to hear, such a shame to lose the sputnik frame :(

it seems like all carbon forks brake right there (like the shots of pista concepts with broken forks), due to it being where the crown reinforcement ends.

glad to hear you're ok.

I love the english subtext to the cafe name, it's nifty.

bexley 10-08-08 10:57 AM

"The garage renovated of cafe."

That hurts to read.

Ride Among Us 10-08-08 11:02 AM

^ thats strange to me to see a pista with a sloping top tube.

it's not crown reinforcement, it's the bonding between the carbon legs and the aluminum crown and steerer. but yeah, that's the weak spot.

It was still fairly new, only got it about a month ago. But it had been really nice so far, pretty stiff and a really smooth ride.

@Zip: thanks man, I'm pretty bummed about losing the frame too. I've just got to look forward to what I'm getting next I suppose. Haha.

TRUST ME, count your blessings that you didn't have any major injuries. I just recovered from a broken collarbone (very common with bicycle accidents) and it was NOT FUN! No riding for nearly 5 months and rehab...not to mention the surgery and A LOT OF PAIN and the ~$3000 out of pocket, even with insurance and of course the loss of work. It was a major pain in the ass.

The bike, on the other hand, is easily replaced...just saying.

bigbris1 10-08-08 11:52 AM

walking disease, I would suggest getting checked out by a doctor now. You never know the full extent of the damage you're sustained internally. Also, even if you're considering getting a different frame, I would push the fact that you frame isn't readily replaceable.

Glad you're OK.
