I recently saw a picture from the 60s I think of 4 or 5 Moulton folders on a 'drome, doing a TTT. Bit of a publicity stunt, but it got me wondering if there is any advantage to having small wheels, and apparently there is. After all, and 18" rim is a lot smaller than a 700c one, thus it can be much lighter (and stronger), any people are always going on about how important light rims are.

GT Timberline 1998 4130 chromoly model with tomac bar ends, straps on stock pedals, an el cheapo replacement rear wheel with a 14t dx hub, spacers from a busted up cassette, and a pvc pipe section to fill the gap, the big ring was also removed.

Nice bikes and probably infinitely pratical. Id have to agree with that poster though. I'd invest in streamers for the spokes and a pink horn before I would put a brooks saddle on one. I do appreciate the "defy convention" aspect of them though. Beats those guys who think that being fixed is somehow ecentric. |

Hope you don't mind me posting this Josh.
Me demonstrating my skid skills for Josh and Pete on Saturday. Oh, and that's a new chainring on my bike... |
hi. i've been reading for awhile, but just "finished' my first s/s, and certainly not my last, fixed might be in the cards next. i'm moving to sf in a few weeks and needed a cheap commuter bike, that if it got stolen, wouldn't piss me off too much. my neighbor gave me her old specialized mtb, so i stripped all the loose ends off, repainted, and made it s/s... i still need to find a new freewheel and chainwheel, but on this bike, it might not be worth it. considering it's "crap-factor". it's been fun, hopefully i'll have another ready soon. thanks for the help!

nah, i didn't get bs'ed. at least, not about the singulator. my dropouts aren't long enough to adjust the chain, and i got the singulator used for $15.. the only thing they gave me a hard time about, was the freewheel, claiming i couldn't use a bmx one because of the chainline... etc... i don't relaly care because like i said, if it gets ripped off, i don't want to put more cash into it.. i've spent like $30 just replacing small stuff, and that's all i'm gonna spend.

Well,
I'm proud to say I've ridden this one. http://www.fixedgeargallery.com/milam2.jpg It belongs to my friend Bill Milam. It is a blast to ride. After a little time on it you forget the small wheels. Perfect for someone who likes to ride at work on lunch, or for other reasons have a bike at the ready. :D |

I've been looking around at flip-flop hubs that would fit my Bianchi Volpe, and theirs comes in my needed 130mm spacing, and the price is nice. |

http://www.bencousins.com/Red_Bike_1.JPG You'll probably have a good laugh at my £1000, 16.9 lb, Dahon Helios XX as well... http://www.bencousins.com/bike.jpg I must say I find it a lot funnier overtaking guys on Bianchi's going up steep hills...BTW - did you know the world speed record for a bike ridden in an upright position was on a machine with 18" wheels? |

Heres mine. Its a fixed conversion.
1976 (I think) PR-10 Peugeot frame. Frame made in France even with the local french bike shop sticker on the top tube. 531 tubes. 85%-90% parts are french made even down to the tape and toe straps OR Peugeot stamped like the crankset (made in Japan) Non-French parts include crankset/BB, hubs, tires, seatpost (just couldnt find a french made 26.4 post that was the right length) Notice the French flag color details on the tubes, top of the seatstays and fork. Thats why I love this frame. Hoping to find a Handlebar Bottle Cage on eBay... gotta keep it old school! |
