Done, no more spending money on bikes for 1 year. I had to make a promise. The build is on velospace. Let me know if you want to meet up for pictures -- I'd be happy to hook you up! |

this is my first fixed project.....tell me what you think? ;)

Nice. The frame could be a touch too big for you, judging by how low and forward the saddle is. Or it may not.
P.s.: I believe that first fixed projects should have brakes. If you're certain you'll be okay, ignore this. |

My new singlespeed mountain bike with coaster brake - really more like a glorified, oversized BMX, but I love it. I just took it out to ramble around some railyards in East Somerville, something I couldn't have done on the fixie. It's a Univega MTB frame i got of craigslist for $20, along with assorted other used parts from here and there. Gear ratio is 42-17, which luckily works with the vertical drops without too much chain slack (just in case, I left the front derailer on to keep the chain from getting thrown). The chainline was a pain in the ass - I had to use spacers to move the chainring out and keep it from rubbing the frame, which necessitated dishing the rear wheel a lot to one side. The wheel still isn't exactly centered in the frame, but it's close enough.

Here is a cute picture I took of my girlfriend last night with her new bike.
http://www.wwmovers-africa.com/haro/emma.jpg Notice the new bike smile! She loves it and rode the heck out of it last night. I gotta say that the frame IS a little small for her, but where the seat is right now (up real high) works just fine, and once I pop on a riser stem her hands will be in just the right place. I'm still going to keep my eyes open for a larger frame if one presents itself in a dumpster or for really cheap, but for the time being she's happy with how it fits. She also wanted to pay for it herself so she gave me what I paid minus whatever chris king headsets cost (because I'm pulling that thing and putting it on my bike!). I'm looking forward to some good rides with her! |
