the fenders came with the holdsworth, and yes they are pretty much for show. ive seen some other holdsworths from the late 60s/70s with the same fenders.

I'm pretty excited...

Just finished my first single-speed project this week, and rode it into work this morning for a shakedown. I could really get addicted to this thing! Here are the details:

+ Mid 80s Schwinn Traveler Japanese-built 27" frame with horizontal dropouts
+ 54cm center to center on seat tube
+ 700c wheels -- Rear is Campy Omega rim with freewheel hub. Front is off an early 90s Peugeot
+ Vittorio Rubino Kevlar tires -- 700 x 25 (most expensive part of the build -- $50.00/pair)
+ 42/18 gearing - Rear is a BMX freewheel
+ 105 Aero Brake Levers
+ SR Long Stem
+ Sakae Road Champion bar -- 42cm with shallow drop
+ Cinelli Bar Tape (Japanese Flag pattern -- discounted to $8.00 at LBS)
+ Ultegra SPD pedals (had these for years on other bikes)
+ DiaCompe long-arm calipers that work on both 27"and 700c wheels

I built this for cheap/simple commuting, using spare parts and elbow grease. The bike originally had a triple-chainring crank; to get a better chain line I turned the axle around to bring the new crank in closer to the frame. This made the lefthand crankarm stick out a little more, which became an advantage when I mounted an air pump under the bottle cage (perfect amount of room). The headset is a new replacement-grade $10 unit I picked up. The Performance Forte Classic seat came off one of my other bikes when I switched it to a wider gel seat for family rides. My overall expense on this is pretty low, because I used stuff that was just laying around.

I can't believe how easy this bike is to ride! It's almost as if it pulls me up the climbs even when I'm in the saddle. And boy is it fast in the descents. I couldn't have picked a better gear combination for my commute (15 miles with varied grades). For my first attempt at building one of these I'm pretty happy with the result.

My next commute into work is too many days away!

umpadumpy, I love that bike. That so similar to what I want to do, even the gearing is the same. Only my project bike is 27", but I want to do it exactly the same, for the most part. Do you wish you had more gearing (42/17?) on the downhills at all?

I started with a goal of using 27" wheels, but I was having trouble finding the right tire/wheel combo so I used 700c stuff instead. Plus, all my 27" wheels are super old and half trashed. Yes, the descents could use a bit more gearing. For me it's a matter of compromise; 3/4ths of my commute is on level terrain so I don't mind coasting down the steep stuff and it helps to have that 18t on the ascent near my office. I might switch to a smaller freewheel when my legs get stronger, but for now I'm enjoying what I have!

Ok yesterday the second last step towards enlightenment finished, the bike is ready but still as SS. Used the old 27 wheels and put on a BMX freewheel and the chainline is ok. It is for me a dream to ride, here are the info:

-Early seventies mid quality Bianchi steel frame, rather heavy but nice lugs
-27 steel rimmed wheels wit 17 teeth Shimano BMX-freewheel
-Campagnolo bottom-bracket and cranks with large ring still on since it is fiveted to the used 42 inner ring
-MTB seatpost, only one I could find with 25,8 diameter
-Noname adjustable stem
-Tektro cheapo brake levers and original centerpull Weinmann calipers

It is a low budget project that will be used during winter, next step is to get a new fixed wheelset and some better pedels but for winter use it is ok.

Ja, men det är jätte fin. Kanske det är lite bättra på ett "single speed", inte "fixed."

Wilken ord ska vi säga för "single speed" eller "fixed"?

SSSwede 10-17-04 09:35 AM

Single speed = Enväxlad (one-geared)
I don´t think there is a Swedish word for fixed, never heard anything else than fixed used. It is not very common here to ride fixed, never seen a track bike here either.

for all those curious as to what the mutant spawn of a bmx and a pista might look like, here's an early photo when i first got my 43cm fuji track se (2002 model) with 650 wheels. i stand 5 feet tall so this was the only stock complete i could find in my size.
