Just took a few shots before taking off the riser bar and putting brakes back on. Commuted for 3 months like its pictured and I'm tired of replacing a rear tire every few weeks, tired of hitting headwinds and tired of being hip. Back 2 mustash bars

Hey Re-cycle, did you notice a difference (good or bad) when you switched your drivetrain from 3/32" to 1/8"?

Re-Cycle 08-28-07 09:25 AM

the change was purely incidental. I wanted to upgrade cranks. Stock cranks use road chainrings, new cranks use track [1/8"] only. So I changed my cog and chain at the same time and was done. Incidentally the chain I'm using does not seem to stretch at all. I'm one of those that likes very little play in the chain and once I set it I like it to stay at that tension. All in all I like the idea that the chain width I'm using and the chainrings are intended to be used like this [no derailment] but I've used single speed 3/32 drivetrains and mixed 3/32 - 1/8 drivetrains without issue. I say use what you got till you wear it out.

MIN 08-28-07 09:53 AM

Aren't 1/8" chains massively heavier than 3/32" chains?

Re-Cycle 08-28-07 09:56 AM

Not just the chains, the cogs and chainrings are also heavier. Don't let the looks of my chain scare you though, its an exceptional brute. Most 1/8 chains don't look like that.

jacobpriest 08-28-07 12:30 PM

i have never seen or held a "massively" heavy chain.

Fuji espree. - i haven't looked up the year yet.
built it from scratch pretty much... original parts right now: BB - frame - fork - stem
all else is new to the bike.

need to replace: front caliper, saddle obviuosly.. this is a crap saddle tossed on just to get it riding till i figure out what i'm putting on it.

needs bar tape but outside of that, really fun to ride...

45:17 geared.
sun rims and continental tires...
er idk what else to say about it..

what do you think?
this is my first build project and it's still got a little bit of work to be finished..
i'm in the process of stripping the decals as i type.

Somebody else around here just did a real nice conversion on a Fuji Berkeley (this thread ).
Yours is looking good too.

The chain can be the heaviest part on some recumbants. And by some, I mean the 14 pound one that a guy brought in to the bike shop.

Aesthetically speaking, I'm a total sucker for the Thomson no-setback/SLR combo.

if i were looking to build up a bike specifically to be a street bike, this would more or less be my ideal setup. that's a solid bike. generic is a stock bianchi pista. not this.
