Really? Because if I were looking to build a bike specifically for the street, I would probably make it a road bike with variable gears and two brakes.

I don't know what you're talking about, because I like the Bareknuckle, and frequently defend the frame as a good value in various threads. I was commenting on the standard no-brake/riser/double strap/Deep V/track frame that is so completely played out at this point.

except that setup is probably similar in weight/maybe even lighter than most of the keirin bikes so coveted on this thread, and may even ride better too.. though the deep-v's might send the weight in the other direction.

cc700 08-29-07 07:22 AM

deep v's are heavy as nuts.

Did you read what you wrote before you pressed "submit reply"?

bonechilling where do you live? 'cause holy hell, do we ride different streets or what? i put between 16 - 20 miles on my bike in a typical day, and if i were beating on a road bike like i do my Iro, i would be doing regular bike maintenance every single night. that bareknuckle is set up to take abuse. is it overkill for the suburbs? probably. is the dude who posted it from the suburbs? i dunno!

i was doing mess work in boston when i built up my iro, and i built it up to be a tank. component-wise, the only real differences between my bike and this one is that i have bullhorns and a crappier saddle. ...and its y'know. ..not a bareknuckle. anyway, my point is that i don't see any merit in hating on something just because its formulaic if the formula works.

and everyone here who keeps crapping on deep v's; how many of you have regularly ridden on them?

I will digress, but i go to school in boston and love to pick up messing to pay for beer. Where did you work? Any where you recommend? Is it hard landing the position? Any info would help. Thanks man

I ride 20-25 everyday on my road bike and rarely have to do maintenance.

goldenskeletons 08-29-07 11:11 AM

i worked for city express. i wouldn't typically recommend them. the runs are as far out as the schrafft center in charlestown to beacon st in the 1700's. you'll ride pretty far out for not great money. however, the folks that still mess there are really great, and if colin is your dispatcher, he'll take care of you, even if he'll never like you (he doesn't like anyone, but that's why i like him).

however, they will hire you with almost no questions asked. i worked part time easy enough while i was in school, but they'll want you for more hours than you'll probably want to give.
you can also check out marathon. as far as entry level courier companies go, those are the two that are easiest to start with. i think most other places require experience or a good referral. good luck!

It is going to be a pain in the ass to unwrap that. I think that was the point.

Straws 08-29-07 12:10 PM

I have to assume someone got a plastic bag caught in their cog while riding and didnt notice till a couple blocks later. Though I dont know how you couldnt notice.

queerpunk 08-29-07 12:19 PM

you think it took a COUPLE BLOCKS for the wheel to make one rotation?

goldenskeletons 08-29-07 12:35 PM

nope! that's what happens when a plastic bag flies at you when you're moving at speed, gets caught on your foot, and then catches in your cog when you go to shake it off.

that's what happens in the amount of time it takes to safely pull off to the side of the road when your moving down flatbush ave at the speed of traffic.

oh! and it WAS a pain in the ass to unwrap that. but the point was that i wanted to post a picture in the photo thread to move it (slightly) back on topic.

one more!

does that look like it only went around once?

asherlighn 08-29-07 12:49 PM

Man that snake is going to make me **** my pants. People need to be responsible with snake pics.

goldenskeletons 08-29-07 01:09 PM

FWIW, mattio (queerpunk) is the one holding the wheel in the second picture. if you'll notice he's actually taking the first picture in the second one.

and OH MY GOD WE NEED MORE SNAKES ON BIKES!!! my new dream retaliation against prick drivers is to throw a cobra throught their window.

Heh. That reminds me that I once destroyed a pair of ipod headphones when they slipped out of my pocket and got tangled in my spokes. Right as I was coming to a stop, I heard a loud "pop" from a cog tooth going straight through one of the earbuds. Fortunately, they were just the crappy ones so it was actually pretty funny once I got all of the wire and plastic out of my drivetrain.

do you know how many times your wheels goes around in like 20 feet?

baxtefer 08-29-07 01:46 PM

not quite 3

eMwolB 08-29-07 01:55 PM

correct!

bboysubhuman 08-29-07 02:11 PM

If They Mated: A BMX bike and an old Schwinn exercise bike.

The back wheel was the front wheel of this exercise bike I found. It's solid steel I think, with a rubber strip around it. The wheel is probably as heavy as the frame. It has a real cog and lockring. The crankset also came off the exercise bike and that puts the gearing at 63/15. It's crazy to pedal that thing.

yeah.. though it did come out a bit convoluted... basically what i'm trying to say is, even if that barenuckle is "generic", it looks like it would perform well. aside from the rims, it's probably not ultra-heavy, and i can appreciate that. also, compared to a keirin bike built up with a lot of njs parts, it's probably similar in weight (those things can be stupid heavy for what they are sometimes) and rides easier on the street with it's geometry.

as a slight aside, a lot of keirin builts would be considered "generic" based on their appearance.
