Humangirl 10-27-07 12:25 PM

why would you actively oppose having two brakes?

Straws 10-27-07 12:44 PM

Then leave. And take your commas ellipses with you.

It's a generally accepted rule that for any bike you need two forms of braking. Fixed gears have their drivetrain and a front brake and freewheels have front and back brakes. Simple as that.

I'm a newbie here and I love it. It's so much more fun than just answering questions directly.

Electrical tape.

He's better off with one front brake and a freewheel than no brakes and a fixed gear. You guys know that.

No it's not. Not at all. It's certainly advisable for added security, but if it is mechanically sound and reliable, then a front brake is perfectly sufficient for a FW bike supposing the rider knows how to use it. Brakes don't just fail if you do proper maintenance (ie look at it every 3 months).

So could we just leave him be and move on? Esp. in the pic sticky and esp. in a forum where people ride brakeless.

marqueemoon 10-27-07 01:33 PM

I was lazy for a few days when the rear brake pads on my ss commuter were down to the metal and just used the front. I still have all my teeth, but two brakes are much better.

Humangirl 10-27-07 02:43 PM

^^see, but that's not stubbornly refusing to use the back brake.

euphoria 10-27-07 02:46 PM

I don't know man, right before I quit riding fixed exclusively I had stopped using resistance on the pedals completely and my ultegra front worked beautifully solo even on descents.

I have issues with this bike.

jerrymcdougal 10-27-07 03:29 PM

Lets try this again, now with clips and appropriate pedals:

80's Spanish Windsor (nothing to do with the BikesDirect Windsor)
-Columbus SP
-Newly added MKS GR9's with MKS clips and christophe straps.
-Only problem is the XL clips seem too big. (read toe overlap) I wear a size 12 though and thats what was recommended.

wheel decals off?

el twe 10-27-07 03:52 PM

Toeverlap is a fairly common occurrence. You want to fit your clips to your foot, not frame geometry.

True, regardless of the overlap I feel the sweetspot of the pedal seems to be too far back with my foot all the way in the clips. I tend to find my self riding without my foot all the way in as it feels better. I figure if I'm not using that part of the clips, why have XL. If I get some Large size, it may kill two birds with one stone.
