I ride on the hoods of my other bike and like to be stretched out more which I cannot do with these bars. Thought bullhorns or maybe another idea might fit the bill better since the position may be a bit better for me. Also, I think something a bit more straight would look better and more compact. So to answer your question, both.

Syntace Stratos will fit in some quill stems. I had a pair in a very old cheap SR stem and now have them in a 3TTT stem. The 3TTT stem has a bolt to expand the clamp area. The real trick is getting the stem past the first bend. This works better with the stem off the bike but if the clamp area is too wide, it probably won't work at all. The 1/8 or maybe 1/4 inch difference in clamp width area between the two stems was enough to make the 3TTT stem impossible until I realized what the expander bolt was for.

That being said, silver/polished bars would look nicer on that frame and I recommend the Soma El Toro bullhorns. Ive got a set of those on another bike.

Bikes: looks like a specialized crux now

it is easier to get leverage to stop on bull horns

thetank, it's 2009! just because someone has a nice bike doesn't mean they know anything about it..

that said, h_curtis - and i wasn't passing judgement on you with my above comment - i think you got the point, but don't chop those bars. they will make someone very happy when you sell them to her or him, and bullhorns can be bought for probably less than what you sell these for, even if you hook up a friend.

that also said, if i were you i'd go with risers. yeah, bullhorns will come closer to being able to replicate the feeling of riding on the hoods of your road drops, but whenever i've ridden risers i've mostly ended up with my hands near the stem - like track drops - or in about the position risers would put me in, with my knuckles faced forward. that, coupled with my extreme aesthetic distaste for bullhorns, would have me choosing risers. but again, that's only if i were in your position. we've all got our own big ideas for our bikes.

Soma Sparrow bars for winter. Not fast but puts you in a great riding position for ice and snow:

why don't you get a new stem as well with a removable faceplate and by every kind of bars and just switch them out as you please?

i just got rb021s and love them so far. i also have straight bars and road drops. haven't ridden the straight bars yet tho. but the road drops are nice without the hoods. i liked them

More positioning?

How would bullhorns give you more positions than drop bars? Bullhorns were designed for time trials and pursuit -- short, intense races. Drop bars were designed for endurance events. If you're going to be in the saddle for a long time, go with the drop bars. Messengers like straight bars and bullhorns because they don't ride continuously for hours without a break.

I'm a huge fan of mustache bars. I can stretch out on them, plus they give me really good leverage for taking off from a stoplight.

Bikes: See my sig...

>>>messenger<<<

I love my drop bars and just swapped out the flat bars on my winter bike to some old road drops... I spend at least 20 hours a week on my bike and love the multiple hand positions, ability to get low when the wind is howling, and climbing / accelerating off the hoods.

The studded tyres don't hurt either.

I'm a big fan of bullhorns, but just remember you usually need a shorter stem to make them comfortable.

I got bullhorns from the LBS. They had them laying around. I put them on and really like them. Got to ride down in FL for a week. Was nice to be in the sunshine for a bit. Thanks for all the help.

Bikes: Bianchi Pista 08. Felt f80.

if you look in the white pages you can find several bars that you could try if you are tired of your regular bar. some you need a membership to get into, but they arent that hard to get.
