I'm more of a utilitarian cyclist. Bucket helmet, clipless with road shoes that suck for walking, gloves, whatever shirt suits my fancy. I did by a wind proof jacket that I would not wear if it wasnt for the bike.

oh speaking of wind proof jackets. Winter is what did it for me. I find leg warmers to be most comfortable and warmer, not to mention slush proof, over any 'normal' pants I own. Winter I bust out the skin tight superhero outfit. Summer I'm a normal civilian.

Exactly. I naively did a 75 mile ride (the Harlem Valley Rail Ride) on a singlespeed with cotton shorts, cotton t-shirt, cotton Vans slip-ons, and platform pedals. It was ****ing grueling, mainly because it was hot, had a substantial amount of climbs, and all the cotton I was wearing nixed any chance of breathability & wicking--there's a reason cotton is often referred to as 'death cloth'. Since then, I've acquired some decent shorts and a lightweight jersey and have never looked back...should help out next month for a 2 day, ~200 mile ride from Baltimore to NYC by way of Philadelphia (using my road bike this time instead of the singlespeed).

Yeah, I'm sitting here looking at winter jerseys and jackets. I really think that if I invest in some decent clothing I can put up with the runny nose. I rode in the winter for years before but seemed to have chickened out lately.

I love riding in winter. Granted, the winters here are waaaaaay better than they are back home, but still…I always kind of feel like a superhero when everyone else is *****ing about the cold/snow and then I show up on my bike. Also, the best thing that happened to me regarding winter riding was discovering Merino. A Merino hoodie and baselayer, plus a tshirt, was enough to get me through all of last winter. Day or night, wet or dry, it was so warm and comfy and never got clammy or stinky like my old windproof cycling jacket.

That brings up a question for you LoRok which you really have answered - do I go windproof winter jersey with a merino base or winter jacket? I have a crap LG jacket that I can throw on if it gets really cold. I'd rather have a technical zip up jersey that I can chuck my swrve hoodie over as well.

NM has my kind of winter. DRY. Here it rains for 20 days straight and I don't ride in the rain. That's what the indoor velodrome is for.

I'm done with windproof. Or at least I'm done with synthetic materials for winter riding. Breathability is just as important when it's cold as when it's warm. I mean, gloves and shoe covers should be windproof, but that's about it for me. And it's not like it doesn't get cold out here, so don't think I'm talking out my heiney hole. But anyway, I would definitely get the Merino base.

i similar setup as LoRok.. baselayer, tshirt, merino hoodie. Depending on weather conditions I might throw on a waterproof shell on top of everything to fight slush.

edit: jealous at indoor velodrome

merino - cotton t - outer breathable layer. Interesting... didn't think the cotton meat in the sandwich would work or is it for the destination and looking normal?

What hoodie do you have? I got the Chrome Cobra. Not to be a shill or anything, but it's pretty much perfect. Reach through rear pockets, perfect fit for riding (long sleeves, low back), perfect weight, soft, good zips. I love it so much. It was also cheaper than any other hipster-approved hoodie I found on the nets.

Edit: Dr., when I'm just riding-riding I wear a Merino jersey with Merino armwarmers. If I do have a destination, though, yeah I'd rather be looking normal. I think it's like the Merino hoodie keeps the outside temperature off me, then the Merino base keeps my inside temperature pretty well regulated, so the t-shirt doesn't really turn into a problem.

I have that hipster approved Outlier merino hoodie..... (awaits bashing)
Though I have it say, it's quite well made with everything you said about the Chrome Cobra minus the back pocket.

I am doing this. I am actually in the market (after I finish my recent build) for a nice road bike!!11!!1!!

I have also checked into the cycling clothing. Wearing jeans while riding can be uncomfortable and hot. I just like the more traditional cycling clothing over spandex

greetings all (said hello in intro thread) I find much of the middle of the road replies to be right on - a hub type is not a personality type. That said, I will still avoid the purchase of neon anything but Dickies for any ride longer than a youtube video can be deadly - that buzzing sound will be your in between parts

I'm always amazed at how people will avoid putting a pair of this $10 rip stop shorts over some lycra riding shorts when riding in town. Looks good, keeps the junk indoors. Plenty of normal looking wicking fabric shirts out there too.

Agreed. When I'm out ripping around in the farmland flats across the bridge I'm in gear. I admit I recently got back into wearing a helmet and have a new Lazer O2 on the way. Riding in the city is ok but not in the heat. when it's cooler I stay closer to town. I've been caught in the cold far from help before and I'm not doing that ever again.

Bought a profile 2 bottle cage for the seatpost today. Getting ready for a metric century hope fully tomorrow or Sunday. The part that keeps me from not going all out is I'm not really into climbing like others are. I like spinning, getting aero and hammering out the kms.

Anyone here take it down a notch from road cycling and racing perhaps to just simplify? Also, when I first came here a couple years back it was all brakeless tarck action in here with a lot of meme/fail/irony BS and it seems to have really mellowed...Part people moving on part people getting more serious about bikes?

Roadie is the new hipster, really I saw one the other day. Full hipster kit but on a really pimp road bike.

Anyway, I myself swore off spandex. It wasn't until before my trip that a friend of mine urged me to give it a shot. I now only have padded shorts. I do have a couple pair of regular underwear for those rare times im not gonna be riding my bike. I am fortunate to have a 2nd hand gear store not far from my house so nice shorts cost me $5, bibs $10 and jerseys $10-$20. Though, I'm really not a jersey wearer. I swear by clipless pedals, have since the first day. I am a bit of a roadie but minus the tude most of them have. I also prefer my fix.

Even as of last year I had "one" wicking shirt and wore it only on days where it was about 25c or hotter. I rarely wear cotton on the bike these days.

I find myself buying a LOT of cycling specific clothing and looking at Castelli jerseys/jackets planning on riding deeper into fall and winter than I have before.

I got a bike for free through a school bike recycling program. It crapped out rather fast, and with my job I quickly saved up the money to get a decent hybrid. After a few months, it got sold and now I have a 2005 Specialized Langster I picked up on Craigslist. At that point, I got a jersey and I can't stop cycling. Already looking at going clipless, getting some padded shorts, etc. I quickly moved from a "Hey, riding a bike to class is fun and convenient" to "Ok, today I'll get my average speed on this path even higher". I don't think I'll be stopping anytime soon.

Skalnik,

May I suggest saying to yourself "Today, I'm going to enjoy my ride to the fullest." or "Today, I'm going to notice every pretty girl." or "Today, I'm going to wave to at least one person." or maybe even "Today, I'll leave 10 minutes early in the hopes I can be of value to someone on my ride to school." Oh, to help this along, leave you cycling computer on your desk at home.
