Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Thinking about switching to freewheel

fixed is awesome, except im getting bored with having to spin like a madman down hills. is it bad that the only reason im reluctant is because i'll miss the ability to lock in good trackstands?

Is your hub flip flop? Try it out for a bit.

No gears is awesome. Fixed or free is up to you.

I can trackstand on my geared bike, but not on my fixed...yet.. what i'm getting at is you might miss it at first, but you can learn to do it with a freewheel.

i think FG would be annoying if it was my only bike. This is why they have flip flop wheelsets...

Bikes: 1994 Bridgestone MB1 (bought new), 1983 Bruce Gordon road bike (Campy Super Record), 2010 Gary Fisher Rig (yeah!), Soma Rush (Wow...me love)

One reason to go SS is that if you can afford/budget it you can use a White Industries freewheel and hearing the "mad hornet" sound of the freewheel when not pedalling is damn near alone worth changing.

I like ss. It allows me to mash super hard knowing that If I "mis pedal" im less at risk of flying off the bike. And when Im in traffic and cornering, I like the ability to be able to coast during corners, and accelerate out.

Im not saying I dont like FG, but SS is awesome if you need a break.

Up to you though. Personal choice.

Buy a freewheel remover while you are at it.

It's weirdly impressive, in an undesirable sort of way. I'm glad my freewheel doesn't do that.

It really really does get annoying. When I didn't have cash to replace my road bike's rear wheel I was stuck riding fixed for a few months. So limiting
