Having lived in NY & Boston, I understand "city life", but I'm hoping that portland has a bit warmer vibe than the east coast cities have. Though, maybe I'm "utopia-ing" the place a bit in my mind?
It is very nice and the cost of living is lower. It did feel very small but then LA is gigantic. I want to visit Portland again but someone I really dislike has moved up there and she hangs out with the same crowd
- Watch Portlandia on Netflix. It's satire, but Carrie Brownstein is from Portland and nails a lot of the quirkiness of the city.
- The hipster is strong here. Lots of plaid flannel, lots of beards.
- The rain, oh god the rain. You learn to deal with it. People bike here in all weather.
- Nobody uses umbrellas. Umbrella = tourist. This place is a North Face ad.
- Fenders.
- Recycling
- Bring your own grocery bag to the grocery store. God, Portlandia nailed all of this stuff.
- Girls dress more grunge than girly. Not much makeup (if any). I guess it's a functional thing with the rain and all. They all wear boots.
- Lots of great coffee.
- Food carts are freaking amazing...and cheap...and amazing. There are some 1 block from my house in South East that stay open to 3AM.
- The city is busted up into quadrants: NW, NE, SW, SE

Each of my grey hairs is frowning at calv. So's my avatar.
Oh man, I grew up in Portland, and was the shining example of a grunge kid. Worshipped Kurt Cobain, had long headbangy bangs, smoked way too much pot. At least I didn't fall into the H crowd (it was pretty huge there at the time).
Today I discovered chipotle plantain soup. OMG, I want to eat this forever, the most heavenly combination of sweet and spicy.

I just noticed the other day that your location changed. So much of that list is true for western WA too. Some day we need to have a BFSSFG get-together for us Seattle/Portland folks.
Are any of you guys doing that huge Seattle to Portland ride in July? I'm probably coming up for it.

I'm sure there are people younger than me who know what that stuff is. I'm just really, really not into stuff like that.
I just did this, they look like normal dudes. I must admit though I'm, much much more used to this:
