Yeah there's a lot of ridiculous things about college. Today I'm wrapping up my final paper. Friday I have my final final. I'm looking forward to being a graduate but it doesn't feel right. Despite being ripped off, I can't help but feel like I'm getting away with something. And despite getting high marks pretty consistently, I can't help but feel like I'm just getting by on the skin of my teeth (or however that saying goes).

Some professors don't like showing up to an empty room to lecture and no matter how interesting a class is there is sometimes a critical mass of students that start not showing up at around midterms and then nobody comes any more. I never really had a problem with teaching to an empty room but I can see providing a strong incentive to show up (and read the syllabus). It's also an easy way to give out bad grades which profs get a surprising amount of pressure to do. It sucks that it happened that way.

hamfoh 12-14-11 01:48 PM

Some professors are crazy weird about attendance. I had a literature professor last year who would literally drop anyone from his class if they missed that 4th day, but he was really clear about how strict he was about it so my ass was always there. This class was a studio class (graphics communications) and I did all my work, at worst I missed a few mid week work days, not major critiques. But the professor was so chill and cool I never considered it a possibility

shame on me

If it's in the syllabus and you decided to stay in the class then you are agreeing to the teacher's terms. I kinda f-ed up with my attendance last semester in a 5 hour evening class and had to do a load of extra credit work to not drop my grade :(

So I had a B and 5 absences over the span of 4ish months. I now have a D on my transcript as a result. I didn’t know any professors actually followed through with that garbage. I feel like I'm 13, not 27.

I had one prof with the same rule (except it was two absences). Made me mad because I live about 10 miles away and about 1000' higher, so a rainy day there could be a snowy/icy day here. Damn near killed myself trying to get to school several times so I wouldn't lose a freaking letter grade.

hamfoh 12-14-11 02:04 PM

yeah my other studio had strict attendance and there was definitely some rain filled days (obviously child's play compared to your situation) that I would normally skip out on that I showed up smelling like a wet dog to in order to get that attendance. I'm totally to blame obviously, I just thought of all the buildings on campus that the fine arts (and a studio at that) would be less strict about it

yummygooey 12-14-11 02:10 PM

The only time I skipped class this semester was so I could either a) study for an exam or 2) finish a semester project. No one in my department cares if you show up to class, but honestly it's better if you do. I figure I pay pretty good money to go to college and if learning could just happen straight out of a textbook, I wouldn't be here.

As an added bonus, it seems that most professors take note of who does and doesn't show up to class, and that can really benefit you when the end of the semester rolls around.

That sucks so bad. I had a prof that did a 0 unexcused absences and something like 10% off your final grade for every unexcused. It was a 100 level Bib-lit gen ed class. -_-

ddeadserious 12-14-11 03:06 PM

Today, it kind of hit me that I only have two classes next semester, and I graduate and should probably enter the real world. The idea of not having class to attend, projects, or papers really messes with my brain.

Ever notice that the 100 level courses always come with the biggest load of bull****, but the 400 level specialized courses seem like a breeze sometimes? Maybe it's just me. Anyhoo, today I'm currently on my 7th pot of coffee pounding out my media dissection project. *******

I agree. Normally when a new project comes up it's like >Get new assignment >Get Early critiques >Work Day >Work Day >Final Critique/Grade

The days I would miss are work days, which is why I talked myself into it. It's also really easy to convince yourself to stay home when your on campus 9-5:30 on M/W and this one is your only Tu/Th class :D

RGNY 12-14-11 06:08 PM

good day:

-Leader 722 frame (green) showed up a day early w/ only minimal box damage (frame is fine) and i got the neat headbadge.

-was able to bust out 150 pushups on lunch.

-tried a great hefeweizen, made less than an hour from me, for the first time. super tart/fresh. http://www.butternutsbeerandale.com/

-good hard sweat from the 30min on rollers.

-made carbonara for dinner

-now have to put the Selle Flite on the 725 while listening to Elvis Christmas music....

oh, and one of the guys i fight with teaches Engineering at RIT, so i asked him his attendance policy. "I will withdraw them after 3 unexcused." eek! :)

I don't feel like doing all the quotes, so here goes. The "epic" post was dripping with sarcasm, but still has valid points.

Ice cream is not a metaphor. I dig ice cream, and other than a lactose intolerant chick I dated years ago, most people I've met do too.

I never said anything about pants. I am a feminist, and I think that an ice cream meet-up is a great way for Jay to start a relationship. I am not sure how you describe feminism Scrod, but according to most that I know, I'm pretty ok at it.

If you think it's too cold for ice cream: A. You are a *****, and B. Find a coffee shop. Ice cream is better though. Especially if it's an old school place with cute glass sundae dishes and cherries and ****.

****... Now I want ice cream for dinner.
