jdg goes fast and hard (twss)

I bonked last week on our 75 mile ride. But to be fair, all I had to eat that day was 1.5 slices of banana bread, a banana, some sausage links and some potato chips (lol my diet), and we spent 3 hours working on 90 kid's bmx bikes in the direct sunlight. Last five miles, and my body decided that hearing wasn't a necessary function. Lulz.

Did 75+ yesterday and didn't bonk, so I guess eating food actually helps. Who woulda thought?

Damn. Stay fed all day. That's my rule. I won't even go on a ride if the day before was lacking in nourishment.

I weighed the Pug at the shop and it was 35 pounds... my other winter bike weighs 42 pounds as the studded tyres and IGH add a lot more weight and the Pug won't need studs for winter riding.

Tonight my friend stopped by with her vintage Mercier road bike and we went for a nice 30km ride through the river valley... she wanted to go hard and fast so there was not much talking and chatting until I dropped her off at home before coming back across the city.

I love riding on Sunday nights... you have things to yourself on the road and it was nice to get the Proctor down into the valley to shake down the new drive train.

Yea, last week I was still settling in (had moved in 3 days earlier) and all I had in my fridge was eggs and romaine lettuce. Too busy riding bikes to go grocery shopping.

jdg made me popcorn today cuz he doesn't trust me to carb load on my own, lol.

Aren't you asian?! Get on that ricecooker man! White rice and sausages - some of the best food for riding. I've decided to make little rice cakes for rides. Cheaper than clif bars. Time to experiment over the next few days.

Have been on a reduced carb diet for quite a few weeks now and have been surprised at how much more energy and stamina I have... have been riding harder, farther, and much faster and still have a long ways to go before I will consider myself "fit".

Yes! I do that all the time at school. So easy, so good. Unfortunately, I didn't bring my rice cooker to Seattle with me since I'm only going to be here for three months.

Awhile back when I did my 200k ride my buddy made a bunch of these: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5UiuqIWGe_s

They were so good, I couldn't stop eating them.

HAHA! This Dr. Lim guy is the one who got me into eating white rice while on a bike. Back in the day when the "white rice is bad" craze hit the interwebs, I fell victim. I substituted all my white rice with brown rice.

It was a bad time for me. When you are an Asian person trying to cut out white rice, suddenly eating becomes more costly. When you have white rice as an option, everything falls into place. Some bonito shavings and an egg, and some white rice in the cooker, and you have a great meal. If you cut out white rice, things become challenging and you look towards... bread? brown rice? (blech)

I'm back on white rice, with plenty of energy while on the bike. I would never cut carbs from my diet considering how much I ride. If I do cut my riding, then of course I'd lessen the carbs.

gigantor 05-28-12 12:24 AM

Also...

Today I'm on day #2 off the bike. I've felt I needed to allow my muscles to heal, and this is the perfect time.

Right now the legs feel like cannons ready to go. But I won't rip into them tomorrow...

White rice is bad if that is all you are eating... I prefer brown and wild rice (in small quantities) as it is only a lower carb diet and there is no lack of calories in my diet.

By adding eggs (protein) and Bonito you add more protein and minerals that the white rice lacks.

So I ran out of juice about halfway through and started puking at the 49-mile mark (actually 57 miles for me, since I missed a turn and racked up some bonus miles.) At least I got a couple decent pictures:

Assembling before the start. There were a couple of single-speeders and maybe one other FG bike.

Misskaz and I have a friend that did it. Apparently, it was super rough.

Yeah, I'm trying to see if he's in that first pic... That might be him in the black kit talking to the girl in pink, to the left of the road sign, maybe? I need to see if he's wearing hi-vis sunglasses, LOL. Anyway, he seemed to be fine when I saw him last night, if a bit (a lot) sunburned. Oh also I think he fell asleep during the party. Made me feel like a wuss for being tired after my 35 miles yesterday morning.

I just got a new, weird, droopy-nose saddle from a friend and am going to test it out today. (Selle SMP TRK if you want to look it up.) If it works for me, she's selling it to me for $20.

Wow. Good eyes. That does look like him. Cadence kit and everything. Saddle for P, G, or new bike?

I can finally go on with my life! Got off the phone this morning with a rep who coincidentally happens to be a cyclist and it turns out my bike was left on the tarmac most likely to a TSA hold up and wound up going on a free trip to denver after being missed by the ground crew.
For the record I checked in 2 hours ahead of boarding with the bike loaded to TSA guidelines. My planned 3 day weekend's ruined but I'm just plain glad at this point. Not to mention a voucher covering my bike's fare and half of mine.

Nagrom_ 05-28-12 12:59 PM

Lucked out!
Which bike was it?

oh god yes. throw a little seaweed in there

I have lived off white rice since moving out of my parents' house, it was still a staple then too. I'll only cut carbs if I start to gain a lot of weight. For now my commute (~100miles/week) and some other riding keeps me balanced.

jimmytango 05-28-12 01:24 PM

Just had a nap, and during said nap I had the most crazy dream. Yes, I dream about cycling, and yes it sometimes involves people from BFSSFG. Whatever. Anyhow, in said dream I was riding around Boston with Scrod, Kaz, and our friend Cupcake (and yes, that is her real name). Went to elephant-trunk skid (something I'd never actually do, by the way) down a hill when my chain snapped. I somehow crash-landed on Kaz and killed her, then Scrod pulled a shotgun out of his backpack and shot me for killing her, then Cupcake beat Scrod to death with her U-Lock, which is hilarious because she's around Kaz's size, which is to say, "****ing tiny". So weird.

Nagrom_ 05-28-12 01:26 PM

Scrod is always packin'.

Today I finished up at my job of six years and I'm getting ready to move from NJ to Toronto. Excited and getting nervous.
