something I can take quality pictures with, maybe something with a few doodads to mess with.

I think I have it narrows down to a Canon PowerShot Elph 300HS, or a Fuji S4500. They both seem like a good deal for the money. To me that is. Like I explained to Jay, if I were to compare it to bikes, at this stage, I'm making remarks like "Hey, This one has wheels!!"..."and they spin!!!"

So I literally know nothing about specs, regarding what is good, and what isn't, beyond mega pixels, and digital and optical zoom. everything else is gibberish to me.

With the Fuji you have a much larger zoom and it uses 4 AA batteries -- so obviously bigger and and heavier. You can use Energizer e2 lithium batteries which are lighter and last longer than typical alkalines, but can be kind of expensive. You'll like the extra zoom, but make sure it isn't too cumbersome for you to take around on rides, etc.

If you're shooting any video, the Canon shoots in 1080p and the Fuji in 720p.

I'm still hungover. Dude.

I've heard great reviews on Sany Eneloop batteries. I think I may use those. I think I may just stop thinking about it and pick up the Fuji.

If worse comes to worst, I still have a better camera than an iPhone.

Dannihilator 06-24-12 07:35 PM

Today I had some fun on the DMR.

I think i would go with the canon, im on my phone so i havent looked at the detailed specs
but from what tomatsu says it sounds like a better option

FWIW the 4/4S take pretty nice pics and video
Also: Eneloops are glorious little things, i got some rechargeables and i dont buy batteries anymore, not just for cameras

Ill check back when i get to my comp tonight on the deets

hamfoh 06-24-12 09:29 PM

what's your camera price range? do you just want a point and shoot or do you want a dslr?

A dslr would be nice, but they're out of my price range, so I'm looking at bridge cameras. I'm really not trying to spend a lot, but would still like to get my money's worth in the <$250 range.

These superzooms intrigue me.

hamfoh 06-24-12 09:45 PM

if you don't need optical zoom for video:

Leukybear 06-24-12 09:51 PM

Get an Olympus EP3. I love mine. It's been holding me up pretty well that I've yet to have sprung for a 3rd gen. full frame after I sold my mark ii despite auditioning & scrutinizing both nikon & canon's offerings.
You just have to love the ability to throw a fully featured camera in a bag and go.

I kinda like it. I'll add it to my list. Thanks.

why you so pricey.

Dannihilator 06-24-12 10:01 PM

Pad and pencil/crayons from the dollar store.....

Totally forgot.... What's your budget anyway?
BTW canon's overrated for compact/ feature filled point & shoots. They got too comfortable on the throne.

Nagrom_ 06-24-12 10:07 PM

I think I'm just gonna get that fuji super zoomer. I don't really think I'd put it though enough use to justify a $300+ camera.

But now it's between the Fuji SL300, and the S4500. They're exactly the same, except the SL300 runs on a rechargeable battery pack, and has a mount for a flash(which I'd never use, so it really just comes down to the battery pack).

If you're tight on cash I think you can buy a potato at the supermarket for ~50 cents. They take pretty sweet pictures.

Dannihilator 06-24-12 10:13 PM

Sidewalk chalk and a hand held chalk board?

Leukybear 06-24-12 10:15 PM

Rechargeables of course; just buy & swap between multiple packs... that's what practically the entire photography world does.

LesterOfPuppets 06-24-12 10:16 PM

At the $200 or so PnS price point I like Panasonic Lumix stuff the best.

Today I got this for $30. I'm feeling hardcore haggler spirit right now! Tange tubing always gets me hot. And War Pigs is on the jukebox right now and whisky is in my hand.

So mean... but funny! I heard you can count to it too.

Not tight on cash, just can't justify a thousand dollar camera for myself.
