Today the sqrl and I went out to lunch at a thai place (peanut dressing on salad... nom nom nom). As we were getting our check, the sky turned gray so we hopped on our bikes and motored home as it was starting to spit, walk in the front door and it turns into a torrential downpour. phew.

rainy day in the garage:

went through the wife's "Dutch" bike (Electra Amsterdam) and once again realized why i hate one of the local LBS's. things set up rather poorly and nothing greased. :/ luckily the Shimano Nexus 3 drivetrain seems pretty idiot proof, even to me.

started going through the '80 Raleigh Gran Sport. aside from needing cleaning/lubing everything seems good on it. someone took care of it. for $20 (+ brakepads/tubes/tires) i'll ride it as is until something breaks, then figure out whether i feel like going fixed with it....

taking a break with a lunch of carbonara and a Spanish garnacha, then back to w(r)enching....

Today I had an awesome park adventure with some friends and their adorable 3-year-old. His name is Jack and he is so talkative and sweet and charming. Pretty well behaved too. There were baby ducklings in the pond and they were so cute.

Then we went to a BBQ place and I had a 1/2 slab of ribs and custard-filled cornbread and I am So Full. Nap time?

Later tonight: awesome rock/metal show at Red Line Tap. So excited.

That's Hay Perro's triumphant return to Chicago isn't it? Damn. If I had the spare dough/time I'd be there. I now live two blocks from that place. Oh well. Tell Chris hello for me.

Today I'm enjoying the weather by running a ton of errands on my bike. It's so nice out...

25 miles into my Strava'ed ride full of sprints, with an 18mph average speed, I dropped my phone hard enough to shut it down and lost the ride. Damn. Also, I just got this phone Tuesday and I already scratched the **** out of it.

Angie and I have been on a huge stuffed peppers kick lately. You can literally put anything is a damn pepper and even making them a little more on the "unhealthy" side still ends up being low carb - which is great because she's diabetic and I'm trying not to be such a fat ass.

Tonight it was chorizo and a top secret mix of cheeses and spices. Grilled, of course.

I could probably eat 12 fried eggs (over hard) but add cheese and some other stuff to the mix and I don't think I'd make it.

I was bummed about getting turned down for a job that I wanted, so I got on the bike and went out for a wandering ride through LA. About 20 miles in I got a call for an interview at another place next week.

Ride bike --> Solve all problems.

Now I'm tired and in need of much crispy Stellas and cowboy rice. Also a shower.

I ate about half of it (plus all the hashbrowns that were underneath the omelette). I think what got me was that I ate a huge bowl of Frosted Toast Crunch right before I went. Plus, I am mildly lactose intolerant so all the milk from the cereal and all the cheese from the omelette killed my stomach.

you're a big dude, you could probably do it. one of my buddies said his friend did it in 8 minutes. i would have been a lot closer to eating 3/4 of it if there wasn't so much freaking cheese on it (which was really gross when it got cold).

I have cut off 17 of 32 spokes on a 21 year old wheel whose spoke nipples are completely and utterly rusted, corroded, and seized to both the spokes and the rim eyelets.

Now I'm taking a break before I cut off the remaining 15 spokes.

(I am trying to salvage the hub; I'm pretty sure the rim is a lost cause.)

Were you able to lower the tension on any of the other spokes? I wonder how much stress is put on a hub when spokes at full tension are just cut.

Not in the slightest. Trying to turn the nipples (first with spoke wrenches, then with pliers) would just strip them instantly.

I tried to compensate for this by cutting the spoke with the lowest tension each time. I also cut all the spokes on one side of the hub first, so that the other side would be effectively detensioned by the time I had cut out 16 spokes (this was a suggestion from an old BF thread).

Using a screwdriver was even less effective than a spoke wrench/pliers, in case you're curious.

The hub seems totally fine. The rim warped noticeably when some of the spokes were cut, so I'm reluctant to try salvaging it, assuming I can even get the stupid nipples out of the eyelets.
