Should I:
Buy a used wheelset: 32H Kinlin NB-R Rims laced with Hoshi spokes to novatec low flange hubs. For $285 shipped.
or,
Build my own: 32H A23 laced to a low flange miche primato in the rear, and a 24H A23 laced to a circus monkey road hub in the front. For around $360 shipped.
For the wheelset I'd be building, I'll have to wait for the A23's to get stocked again before I can start on it. Additionally, I have never built a wheelset before, nor do I have a truing stand (nor have I ever trued a wheelset for that matter). So, I'd kind of be riding blind with internet tutorials, and using a few pieces of DIY equipment. Would probably have to take it to a shop and get them to check that its true and tensioned properly.
For the used wheelset, I'm told the hubs still spin well, and that the wheels function perfectly. but I'm ordering it, so I don't have the ability to check it out beyond pictures. It does end up being about $75 cheaper too, which is a pretty big deal for a pretty-broke college kid. I think this wheelset will end up being the same weight, if not a little lighter. The downside is that I don't get the added ride quality of the 23mm wide rims.
Thoughts?

beater bike for rain and store runs, converting an old 12 speed and adding fenders and racks/panniers
110 bcd crank with 52t and 40t rings
should i:
40/15 to keep it mostly the same as my good bike (70 gi)
40/16 for slightly easier ride with groceries and panniers and whatnot (65 gi)
52/20 for an inbetween of those 2 (68 gi)
granted im not trying to put this thing in a race, but with a huge ring on a tiny spider i know the 52 will be more flexy
really im just thinking out loud here, would a 3-6 gi change even be noticeable? (from my daily rider of 71 gi)

I've had my "fixie" for all of spring and summer. Looking to do some longer rides this fall... SHOULD I...
HTFU and ride it fixed until I can afford a geared road bike in the spring.
OR
Add a freewheel and some levers/hoods, maybe the ability to coast down the hills, and ride on the hoods instead of in my drops will add enough comfort to get me over the hump on some of the longer rides?

3-6 gi is definitely noticeable. Go with 52/20 and don't worry about it. There's a reason bcd has gotten smaller over time. It doesn't really matter that much, especially if you're not racing.
52/anything looks boss anyway.

Next Project....?

Still undecided on hubs/bars, but I'll have plenty of time to think. Ordering the frame once the car sells! Thinking Black frame with slightly lighter black Logos/signature.
