Scrod have you ever done a bike fit?

I'm asking because I imagine that you do long rides with the fixed bike sometimes and as I do longer and longer rides I see that every inch of hardware that's it's not set up appropriately comes in evidence on these type of rides.

What's the best way to adjust the star nut placement? I want to cut some steerer tube, but my problem is the star nut is already installed. Can I go ahead and make the cut and then use the tool to further push it down or does it need to be removed, and if so, what's the best way to do this?

scrod whats your opinion on the soma hellyer crankset?

If you don't have a star nut install tool, you can just tap it down, either before or after making your cut depending on how much your removing. I used to do it with a wooden dowel that fit nicely inside the steerer or a long bolt with the same threading as the top cap bolt - just thread it into the starnut and lightly tap it with a hammer. Be careful not to tap it down too much and you'll be all set.

I've never done a proper bike fit on someone else but I know the way my bike is set up works for me.

It's an older, mid-grade Andel crankset. The chainring looks cool. That's all I've got.

so the star nut can be pushed down with the tool np even if already inside the tube? the tool is only $20 so I figured I may just pick one up, since I don't have that or any dowels lying around to test it out

also what do you use to cut your tubes? pipe cutter?

hamfoh 04-09-12 07:17 AM

one more: when do we get to see your new build?

If you're using the star nut tool, just thread it in and tap away. The tool will prevent it from going down too far.

I always use a Park SG-6 cutting guide and a fine-toothed hacksaw.

I've done it with socket wrench http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=244573

against the nut inserted into the star and tapped with mallet.

It took me3-4 easy taps.

To have a straight cut I used the old stem that I do not care about and cut it against it.... with electric metal saw.

Scrodzilla 04-09-12 09:45 AM

justfitme is the new hairnet.

yummygooey 04-09-12 11:02 AM

I did it just using a bolt threaded into the starnut. It worked, but it was dumb. I do not recommend this method.

yummygooey 04-09-12 12:27 PM

Scrod, do you know of any good gumwall 25c tires? Pasela TG's only go down to 28. :/

Scrodzilla 04-09-12 12:36 PM

Pasela TGs do come in 25c. I had them on my gold Leader and we just got a dozen of them in stock at the shop.

yummygooey 04-09-12 12:39 PM

Oh hey, look at that! I'm bad at Google. :(

Wish I could snag them with the order I just put them in but I think I should give my wallet a rest for the time being. Just planning ahead.

hamfoh 04-09-12 12:55 PM

I got some as well and have been too lazy to switch them out since I've been e njoying my gp24s

Santaria 04-09-12 01:00 PM

I'm switching my rear cog to a 15t from an 18t. My lockring is in good shape, but do I need to replace my chain too? I have the extra links still from the original that I can rebuild - but am using a horizontal dropout.

Scrodzilla 04-09-12 01:16 PM

Unless your chain is really old/worn, I'd give it a go as is. You'll know right away if you need a new chain.

I'm sure this has been asked and answered (perhaps a million times, and more than a hundred years ago), but what ever happened to Vixtor/Squirrelli? I've been away for a few months, and I notice his little avatar line says "GONE~"

I remember he was a solid citizen.

Tried searching but the search is acting flaky.

Scrodzilla 04-09-12 02:46 PM

He died. Again.

tiiger 04-09-12 03:28 PM

Sorry to hear that.

Aww, people miss you, Vixtor! You should come back!

(I also totally asked this question in carleton's thread awhile back, much less than the fact that many people have asked before that and since then.)
