Stack height is 31.5 based on my actual measurement. Unless your stem is slammed and you're not using any spacers, you don't need to match the stack height of your current headset.
|
Well, sir, my stem is slammed and I use no spacers. I got doored a month ago and the only fork in the city that matched my bike was from a 54, and my stem is too tall to use one spacer safely.

scrod-
i switch a bunch between my platforms/straps and clipless set up (shimano 105s). i use the appropriate pedal wrench, but i'm wondering if i'm putting too much stress on the pedal threads from doing this. i do it about once a week or so for long distance riding, as it's more functional. should i stop being so paranoid about it and keep at it, or should i just stick to one or the other? i use grease each time, and don't over-wrench on em or anything... |
As long as you're not being ham-fisted and using grease, I think you'll be okay.

http://www.cyclesmercier.com/geometry_tt.html original fork rake is 28, scrod's fork is 41 that's a lot of difference, handling would definetly change, wouldn't it? |
No one really knows the actual rake of the stock Kilo fork because they all seem to differ from one to another. I know a few people who have put that threaded fork on Kilos without any issues.

But yea, quick research showed that the kilo forks are very inconsistent. Assuming that there is a large difference like 8bit mentioned, what adverse affects, if any, would i experience? Will the bike be "unsafe" in any way? |
http://sheldonbrown.com/gloss_ra-e.html#rake
it affects the trail of the bike, the bike becomes more twitchy and responsive but less "stable" not something that would be unsafe, but it's good to know that handling would change nevertheless. |

Scrod,
Long story short, Mucky and I are trading Kilos. Would anything prevent us from also trading forks temporarily? I'm assuming that the crown race will be the same regardless of headset correct? Is there anything that would cause the parts to not play nice with each other? |
Crown race depends on the headset.

The crown races may be the same but it's unlikely.

I guess we can have a shop switch the crown races right? |
Wait...you're trading frames/forks but keeping your headsets and switching them over?
|
sounds like trading frames but keeping forks.

I forget what fork he has. I didn't want to buy a new fork yet, because we're trading temporarily to test out fitment. If we're both happy with it, then we'll make the trade permanent, and I'll buy one of your 1" straight blade forks. Do you have any pictures of that fork on a kilo?

Ohhhh.
Actually, the stock Cane Creek headset has caged ball bearings and the Orbit-X are cartridge, so there's no way the crown races will even be similar. Don't try knocking the races off with a screwdriver & hammer. |
